How Poor Food Intake Increases Belly Fat

January 20th, 2010

Food is not only important for our biological growth but also affects our emotional and social interactions. Unfortunately, the real meaning of food has got lost in the present rat-race which we term as ‘life’. This super-fast lifestyle is taking a huge toll on people’s health and most of them do not realize it until it is too late. A vibrant health is what everyone should have but how many of us actually possess it?

In this ‘instant’ age food is the prime casualty. Work, home, social pressures all combine to make healthy eating habits seem difficult and that ugly roll of fat around the stomach is proof of it. Here, we will try and show how poor food intakes increases belly fat.

Who doesn’t want to look good? It’s human nature to want to look attractive. People spend money on gyms, on fad dieting just so that they can possess an enviable figure… Besides looking ugly, fat on the abdomen is a sure sign of a host of diseases which just may attack you making this fat extremely injurious to health. Nature designed the human body so that it would store fat as energy reserves but along with a leap in technology(cutting our work into half), came increased inactivity and poor dietary habits and this contributed to fat getting accumulated on the abdomen.

Poor food intakes increases belly fat because poor quality, high in calories food stimulates the increase of fat cells and creates new fat cells. A diet high in sodium and fat and sugar adds to the abdominal fat. People now are so pressed for time that they take short-cuts for food and have now substituted good old home cooking with ready-to-eat food packages. Fast food is poor food, no matter what the companies do to advertise their products as healthy. Junk food contains high levels of fat, sugar and salt. It is popular because it is easy to buy, needs no preparation and is convenient to eat and it also increases your waistline.

Studies have shown how poor food intakes increases belly fat because eating less fibrous and nutritious food results in poor elimination which in turn, causes bloating and distention of the stomach. You will not be able to get rid of that belly fat without taking a good look at what you are putting in there. If you treat your stomach as a trash can and insist on dumping nutrition-deficient food in it, it will take its toll on you.

People don’t realize that no matter how much exercise they do, poor food intakes increases belly fat and they should guard against it. Whenever we are too emotionally charged, we tend to eat more and most of the time; we reach out for that packet of chips or that chocolate cake. In our stressed out mentality we don’t realize the impact of these high-fat saturated foods and thus our poor food intakes increases belly fat. Food high in proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals is essential for a balanced diet. These food groups give the right amount of nutrition needed by the body.

Many times people make the mistake of dieting very rigorously in the hope that they will slim down and they remain hungry for long periods. But, this makes the body go into the ’starvation’ mode, it decreases the metabolism and fat cells break down less and this is another instance of how poor food intakes increases belly fat.

Thus, the right kinds of food choices are very important for radiant health and an enviable figure!

Bad Habits Can Affect Your Overall Health

January 20th, 2010

Bad habits can often have adverse effects on your health. They can make you feel unwell and cause long-term affects on your physical condition. If you want to live a long and healthy life, there may be some bad habits you need to overcome.

Many of the bad habits that make you feel poorly are related to diet and nutrition. A growing number of people in the US are becoming obese. This is mainly due to the fact that they have developed the bad habit of overeating, as well as eating to much “junk” food.

This can lead to numerous health problems and diseases. Heart disease, diabetes, bone and joint distress, and many other physical conditions can result. Even some forms of cancer occur more often in obese people. Moreover, very obese people are often bedridden and cannot care for themselves.

Some people do not have the habit of overeating. They just eat the wrong things when they do eat. They may eat fast foods at every meal. This can literally make you sick and cause weight gain as well. The high quantities of fats, sugars, and starches in fast foods make them very unhealthy.

Other foods can be bad habits as well. Fried foods cause health problems such as raising cholesterol and clogging arteries. Foods that are low in fiber lack a substance the body needs to function well. It is a bad habit to avoid high fiber foods. Foods high in sugar are bad habits, if not addictions. They affect the metabolism in drastic ways, causing an imbalance in energy and insulin, which can lead to diabetic conditions.

People have trouble knowing what kinds of electrolytes they need. Some people have bad habits when it comes to salt. They will salt all the food on their plate as soon as they sit down, without even tasting it first. Too much salt can lead to hypertension and even high blood pressure.

Even if you eat right, you will be weak if you do not exercise. Living a inactive lifestyle is a bad habit. You may not have much choice about how much movement is allowed at your job. That does not mean that you cannot get out and get your heart beating before or after work.

In fact, if you do not have time to exercise outside of work, you probably have another bad habit in the health area. Overworking is a cause for several illnesses. High blood pressure, heart disease, and others can plague you if you do not stop and take time to relax at home.

A discussion of bad health habits would not be complete without reference to smoking, drinking, and drugs. Each of these has dire health risks that are known by most people. If you smoke, you might get lung cancer. You might also get COPD, another breathing disorder. If you drink, you might have liver failure. Drugs can do all kinds of damage, including damage to your brain and heart.

Others care about your health, as you should care, too. It may be difficult, but kicking your bad habits and making yourself healthy again is a worthy goal to aspire to. Why not start today?

Very Fast Weight Loss

January 19th, 2010

The rise in the number of fast foods joints that have a lot of saturated fat in the meals, the use of a lot of refined sugar in sodas and other processed foods and eating food with less fiber have all contributed to the fact that there are more people than before who are classified as either overweight or are obese. A lot of other factors cause this to happen such as genetics, overeating and as people age; the metabolism slows down making it harder than before to burn the food that was just consumed. The rate that a person loses weight is commensurate to how it is gained. Rapid weight is not good advisable since it leaves the person with lose skin and the only way to get rid of that would require surgery. Weight loss depends on the condition of the person which includes weight, health, calorie-intake, age, gender, lifestyle, stress level and routine. Being overweight does not necessarily make a person unhealthy. It just makes the person a bit unfashionable. Studies have shown that people who are a bit overweight live longer than those who have normal weight. There is no quick or overnight solution for quick weight loss. Nutritionists and other health experts will say that a person’s weight with proper exercise can actually help lose a certain number of pounds per week The best way to do this is with a low calorie diet and an exercise plan. The first thing a person needs to do is to choose a diet program designed by a dietitian or another health professional. The patient has to be evaluated before any program can be made. The program usually consists of an eating plan and an exercise program that does not require the use of supplements or one to purchase any expensive fitness equipment.  The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and lose weight. A good diet should have food from all the food groups. This is made up by 2 things. The first is carbohydrates. The food that a person consumes should have vitamins, minerals and fiber. A lot of this can come from oats, rice, potatoes and cereals. The best still come from vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.  The second is fat which can come from mono and poly saturated food sources rather than animal fats. Since fat contains more than double the number of calories in food, this should be taken in small quantities to lose weight. All diet plans are designed to make the person induce reduced amount of calories into the body. This does not mean that the person has to eat less. It just means that one has to eat smart by choosing the foods that have less calories. This makes it possible for someone to lose weight without the need to eat less. During the course of the program, the person should still consult with the doctor and other health experts to monitor ones progress. There will be times that it is essential to modify the diet plan to further lose weight. It is up to the person already to stick to the program to see that it works.

LIGHTSIDE

A hillbilly and his son were visiting a mall for the first time.  They were amazed by two walls that could move apart and then slide shut again.

The boy asks his father what it was.  (Never having seen a elevator before) The father replies, “Sorry I have never seen anything like this before”.

Just then an oversized lady came and pressed a button on the wall. The walls opened and the lady stepped into a small room.  The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light sequentially. They watched as it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.  When the walls opened again a attractive slim 24-year lady stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the lady said to his son, “Go get your mother”

FOOD INSPECTIONS

GOOD NEWS FOR OUR HEALTH FROM FAST FOOD

Fast-food outlets including McDonald’s and KFC have pledged to make their food more healthy as part of a campaign to cut heart disease and obesity. Burger King, Wimpy, Nando’s and Subway promised to cut salt and fat levels. The Food Safety Authority will monitor the commitments with the aim of making the food eaten by more than three million Britons a day healthier.

The baking, grilling or frying of starchy foods can create a harmful substance called acryl amide.  Acryl amide is a chemical that forms in some foods during cooking at high temperatures. The natural sugars and the amino acid asparagines found in some plant foods combine naturally to produce acryl amide when subjected to high heat. Common food sources of the chemical include potatoes, grain products and coffee.

Very low levels of acryl amide are present in drinking water compared to the much larger amounts of the chemical found in cigarette smoke and certain foods.

At present, the World Health Organization classifies acryl amide as “probably carcinogenic to humans” on the basis of the evidence from animal studies.

At the heart of problem is the way we prepare potatoes and grain products. Some of the largest sources of acryl amine in the diet include french fries, potato chips, ready-to-eat cereals, cookies, graham crackers, pastries, coffee and toast. All of these products are processed or prepared at high temperatures.

Large amounts of acryl amide form during high-temperature cooking techniques such as frying, grilling, broiling, roasting or baking. Foods that are cooked to a dark brown color contain higher amounts of the chemical than those that are stopped at a golden yellow.

Little or no acryl amide is produced during lower-temperature methods such as boiling, steaming, poaching, braising, blanching and microwaving.

Acryl amide is usually not present in raw plant foods. It’s typically not associated with meat, dairy products or seafood.

The higher the temperatures and the longer the times that plant foods are cooked, the greater the amounts of acryl amides that are formed.

Cook at recommended temperatures to destroy germs while preserving the maximum flavour and nutritional value of your food.

NEXT HEALTH CRISIS?

The past decade witnessed the massive off shoring of jobs to low-cost countries, decimating the U.S.A. and Canada manufacturing base. Cheap food may bring the next health crisis.

Ice cream. Yogurt. Crackers and biscuits. Egg and products containing powdered eggs. Cake. Powdered and condensed milk, pet food, pie, cereal plus other food products.

You probably consumed some of these products.  Did you know where they came from?  You may have thought these products were produced in the USA or Canada.  You would not know that some of these products came from china, and yes, China imports them into Canada and the USA.

These foods of Chinese origin have been found by authorities in the United States, Canada, Australia, to contain an industrial chemical called melamine that is used to make plastic.  In recent weeks, the Chinese government has admitted that adding melamine to food – which raises protein levels, making poor-quality products look more nutritious – is common practice in China.  Melamine can cause kidney stones and kidney failure when eaten. It has already sent about 54,000 Chinese consumers to the hospital and caused the deaths of at least four infants.

USA OPENS FDA OFFICE IN CHINA

Worries about the quality of Chinese exports to the U.S. have become a major feature of bilateral trade ties, with substandard Chinese food and toys covered in lead paint among the recurring product safety scares.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, speaking on the eve of opening of an FDA office in Beijing, said a new strategy was needed because the United States imported $2 trillion worth of goods a year, equal to four times the size of the Brazilian economy.

The FDA Office will be the first outside the US and will be followed by two more in China this month and one in India next month.

BEWARE FDA SCAM

As part of a fraudulent scheme to extort money from consumers, callers have falsely identified themselves as officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Consumers should know that FDA officials never contact consumers by phone to demand money or any other form of payment. “Impersonating an FDA official is a violation of federal law,” says Michael Chappell, FDA’s acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.

A subsequent call is received from a fraudulent “FDA special agent” informing the consumer that a fine of several thousand dollars is required to be sent to an address in the Dominican Republic to prevent incarceration or other legal action.

Report complaints or information regarding this scheme to FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations at (800) 521-5783.

RECALL NOTICE

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Fiesta recalls 47,000 Blue Ember grills

Fiesta has recalled 47,000 of its Blue Ember gas grills because improper assembly of the grill poses a fire hazard. Fiesta has received 14 reports of grill fires although no reports of injuries.

CLEANING TIPS

Commercial cleaning supplies can aggravate your allergies and have long terms effects on your health. You can save on your house-cleaning bill with very good results using less toxic substances. Before washing, it is essential that all stains be removed. Sometimes Soap or hot water will set a stain and make its removal impossible.

RESPONSIBLE DRINKING

If you have teenagers, or in fact any adult, impress on them the risks of driving while intoxicated. Statistics demonstrate drunk drivers cause many fatal road accidents.

It should be known that like any other drug, addiction is a potential hazard.  Excess of alcohol will affect organs such as the brain, heart, and liver.

Your Diet… Is It Putting Your Health At Risk?

January 18th, 2010

Are you feeling tired, stressed, or apathetic? Did you know these are all common signs of a diet lacking nutritional value? If you are dieting, ill, or eating a fast-food diet, you should you be concerned that you and your family are getting proper nutrition from your food.

If you find that a day goes by and the only thing you’ve had to eat is a bagel and coffee or maybe some fast-food you will no doubt be feeling the physical effects of a lack of nutrition. Lack of mental clarity, weakness and irritability are all signs you haven’t given your body enough good food to eat.

On the other hand, if you or your children indulge in high calorie diets on a regular basis you will notice the effects of over nutrition. Weight gain and related symptoms will also zap your energy and put a strain on your body.

Your diet is a crucial element to feeling good, strong and alert. If you’ve been suffering from a diet lacking in nutrition, or an over indulgence in nutrition, you’ll certainly be feeling the effects on your overall health – and even worse – you may be setting yourself up for more serious disease.

You obviously need calories for energy. It is vital to obtain the necessary amount of calories every day to maintain your optimum health. Individuals who do not take in the proper amount of calories because of ill health, physical disability, dieting or problems with absorption, usually begin to loose weight, lack concentration and as time passes they begin to loose the function of organs such as the reproductive system and eventually major functions of the heart and lungs.

A diet too high in calories will also put your health at risk. More common than under nutrition in developed countries like the United States, obesity puts a strain on the organs and increases the risk for health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.

Knowing what a typical serving size of food is can help you determine if you (or a family member) are taking in the appropriate amount of calories. It is important for parents to teach children moderate eating habits to ensure good eating for life. I cannot stress this point enough!

Aside from merely watching caloric intake it is important that your diet has strong nutritional value as well. You could eat an entire box of doughnuts to meet your calorie needs without having met your daily requirements for vitamins, protein, calcium and other minerals.

Choosing a diet that lacks nutrition on a regular basis will lead to a lowered resistance to illness, general weakness, and irritability. Other diet deficiencies, such as a lack of calcium, can lead to more serious disorders like osteoporosis.

While pregnant and/or lactating women, the elderly and ill individuals may have no choice but to to supplement their diet with multi vitamins, the average healthy person should attempt to get most of the nutrition they need in a normal diet that includes fruit, vegetables, protein (meat and lentils), dairy and fibre bread and cereals).

Fast-food in the diet is not harmful if it is only an occasional treat, but may show its negative effects if consumed as a major part of the diet. Educating yourself and your family on what a healthy diet is will help you and your family feel great and enjoy good health for years to come.

I Love to Live – Five Reasons for Me to Make Healthy Food Choices

January 18th, 2010

It’s not easy making healthy food choices. Constantly we are being bombarded with commercials parading the benefits of eating unhealthy and giving good reasons for doing so. Thats the American way of life. Work hard and fast, eat bad and fast and the heck with the consequences. We’ll deal with that when the time comes.

The consequences can vary from bad to worse. For me it was a trip down the highway with the sirens blaring, the lights flashing and the paramedic feeding me nitroglycerin. That trip was not fun, as a matter of fact, it was down right scary. But it did get my attention!

Being a young man of sixty five I wasn’t ready to pilot a rocking chair just waiting to die. I wanted to live, be productive and enjoy life. So I decided that if I wanted to live – I’m working on Methuselah’s record – I needed to make some changes in my life.

What I needed to change the most was what I put in my mouth. They say you are what you eat. Eat junk and you will have an unhealthy body. Unless I have a good reason to change, I can be very stubborn. So here’s a list of the reasons I came up with to make healthy food choices.

1}Say Goodby To All The Chemicals

Read the label of that food you are about to serve your family. Look at all the preservatives that are used to keep it from spoiling and better yet look at all those ingredients you can’t even pronounce let alone know what they are.

I have always wondered why they use a name for sawdust that we don’t understand if the stuff is so good for us. You don’t suppose they don’t want you to know they’re putting sawdust in your food do you?

That is one reason I am all for making healthy food choices. All the different preservatives and chemicals that are contained in processed foods couldn’t possibly be good for you.

2)I Want To Savor The Flavor

One of the biggest reasons for making healthy food choices for myself is the flavor. I like to taste food! I like the robust flavor of fresh fruits and vegetables. Canned vegetables don’t have much taste, they tend to be pretty bland thats the reason for all of the recipes that have them swimming in mushroom soup or cheese sauce. You need something to add flavor.

Try some fresh green beans. They are loaded with flavor, delicious to savor and best of all they are loaded with good for you nutrients.

Nutrition Supplement a Real Live Nutrition
The term “Nutrition supplement” is very well-known to most of us but do we understand why it is so essential? Nutrition, by phrase-book definition, is the summation of the processes by which someone takes in and utilizes food substances. The most important advantage of using food substances are the ingestion of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, herbs, etc. These are some of the stuff that keeps our body hale and hearty.
What is Nutrition Supplement?
When folks do not get sufficient nutrients through food and while diet does not work, people go around getting help from various types of nutrition supplements. A nutrition supplement is added to the diet to compensate the deficiency. The supplement increases the intake of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, etc. Without proper nutrition, you wont be healthy and fit. Health and fitness go hand-in-hand and it is truly possible for everyone to improve their lives through dietary changes and regular exercise.
How To Use Nutrition Supplement?
These days, lot of people use some type of nutrition supplement. In 1996 alone, people spent more than $6.5 billion on dietary supplements, according to Packaged Facts Inc., a market research firm in New York City. Nutrition supplements are found in several forms: nutrition bars, tablets, capsules, powders, liquids, etc. A lot of supplements do not need any recommendation. You can buy them in health food stores, grocery stores, drug stores, or through online shopping. But you should be very careful about buying because many supplements available on the market do not meet FDA standards.
Cheap quality and imitation supplements are quite common and there is hundreds of scammer lurking everywhere, especially online, to cheat gullible consumers. Always buy from renowned and trustworthy manufacturers and dealers to ensure that you are not gulping down some unwanted or even dangerous preparations.
The good news is that there is also plenty of information available to help you make a choice about the best nutritional supplement for you.

Airport Food

January 17th, 2010

I flew out to Utah recently and was shocked by how many people choose to purchase the worst available food in the entire airport. Hordes of people crowded into the fast food vending areas, eating greasy, sugar-injected, over-salted, saturated fat infested crap by the mouthful.

There I was, in Chicago on a layover when I started to feel a little hungry, so I took a little walk to assess my choices.  There was a generic sit-down restaurant, a health-food store, and a fast food joint.  I chose to walk into the health-food store and purchased a meal replacement bar, a fresh fruit cup, and a fresh salad.  I was in and out of the store in just minutes, less time than anyone waiting in line for their heart-attack on a sesame seed bun.  If you haven’t seen the documentary about the guy eating all the fast food from one restaurant in particular, I strongly recommend making your self watch it.  The option was there, I was the only person making the healthier choice.

America really needs to slow down for a few minutes and take a long scrutinizing look at the way we eat and live, we are hurting ourselves on many levels; our bodies are falling apart, we are hurting the health care system, insurance policies are continuously rocketing parallel with the rise in health issues. Pharmaceutical companies are profiting immensely, primarily because we do not know how to, or we are too lazy to take care of ourselves.  We eat crap, we don’t exercise, and we abuse our bodies. Everyone feels like crap, everyone has some kind of health issue or another that could be avoided or corrected by making better lifestyle choices.  Your doctor puts you on a cholesterol lowering medication because you won’t lose excess weight or seriously change your eating habits; that pill seems to work for a few months, and then a side effect occurs that requires some other medication. Sometimes the list goes on like a local drug store inventory record. Every time we feel different or sick we think we need a drug; usually just masking the underlying problem by numbing your existence while potentially causing other adverse health issues.

It is odd to me, that most people are so quick to provide the excuse that they cannot afford to eat healthy, purchase vitamins, or cannot afford to spend money at a local gym, or on purchasing minimal exercise equipment, yet these same people can afford to smoke regularly, purchase coffee regularly, pay for cable in order to sit in a stupor several hours every week, purchase soda or junk food regularly, make several trips to the vending machine a week, go out to lunch a few times a week, and even splurge on an indulgent couple of drinks or cocktails regularly. And as for using time as an excuse; the average American spends more than 4 hours every day on their butts watching some degenerative television programming. It is a matter of priority, not resources. No more excuses, there is no better time than now to improve yourself!  Follow Rob, AKA ExerciseMan, on Twitter.com.  He talks about exercise, diet, and overall health.
