Poor Nutrition Equals Poor Health

January 11th, 2010

Nearly 30% of Americans are now considered obese. This statistic is downright startling! Not only is this trend affecting adults, but it is setting a tone and creating an example for our children. Our busy work lives, money problems, stress and anxiety, combined with the ease and price of obtaining processed or fast foods, all lead to people becoming heavier and unhealthier. We lack time, knowledge and a desire more often than not, to plan ahead, prepare our foods or make good choices.

If that wasn’t enough, the amount of conflicting data and opinions that float around make it even more difficult for us to know what is true and what is false, what we should eat and what we shouldn’t. Each day, reports on new studies arise that debunk a previous study done on a food that was supposed to be a healthy choice. It’s nearly impossible for anyone to keep up with the latest scientific news, and as a result, we take the easy route, give up and turn to easy to prepare, but unhealthy meal choices or the ever popular, fast food.

It’s up to each and every one of us to look after our health. If you’re healthy, you have far more energy to spend with family and friends. You can pursue your interests, take a class, go skydiving, camping, hiking or join a sports team. Your life will be fuller, you will be setting a better example, and the time spent on learning about health and exercising, is paid back tenfold over the long term as you live longer and spend more time with your friends and family.

Possible Health Issues

As you age, weight issues become more and more of a problem. Child obesity rates are soaring, and an unhealthy child usually leads to an unhealthy adult. There are a myriad of health problems that you can fall prey to if you’re overweight. Below are just a few of them.

What Can I do about it?

As you can see from the list above, many of the health risks can be debilitating, and can put your life at serious risk. There are a number of things you can do to prevent this from happening to you.

Knowledge is power. Learning about the types of foods that are good for you is crucial if you want to lose weight. A nutrition coach is your best bet, since it’s their job to be aware of what foods are best, and how they affect your body and teach you what you need to know.

Meal planning and tracking are a great way to ensure proper weight management and progress. Your daily diet is the very first thing you should look at if you want to control weight issues. Included in your daily diet assessment is meal timing. Far too often, people believe that proper nutrition is solely the types of foods you eat. Unfortunately, it is not that simple, as there is far more that goes into it but, good nutrition coaching can make the process more manageable. Programs such as those offered by eFitness for Life do just this. We have one goal, help as many people as possible get in shape and learn about proper nutrition, including supplementation and vitamin and mineral intake.

The first step to weight management is recognizing the issue and seeking help. Many people feel embarrassed by their weight, and instead of asking for help, they continue down the same path, which inevitably leads to a lower quality of life, health problems and shorter life spans. By combining proper nutrition, healthy supplementation and exercise, you can control weight issues, lose fat and gain muscle. It is possible, and eFitness for Life would love the opportunity to help you. Together we can make a difference.

By now, everyone should know the importance of physical fitness and fitness training programs, but not very many of us recognize the true value of healthy meal plans as well. Irrelevant of the types of fitness training you use, be sure you have a balanced healthy diet to go with it.

What Makes Smoke Inhalation Dangerous

December 29th, 2009

Everyone knows about the damage that can be done to your lungs because of smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and drugs of many kinds. Over time people who smoke will experience a continuing decline in their breathing quality. They will experience a shortness of breath and their physical capabilities can be impaired as well because the body can not get as much oxygen as it needs to the brain and the rest of the body. It is so difficult to understand why people inflict their own selves with these terrible side affects of a habit that is completely unnecessary.
Aside from the self inflicted complications from inhaling smoke, there are other cases where people end up taking it in through no fault of their own. Living in large urban areas where the air quality is not nearly all it should be can also cause some people to have difficulty breathing and with certain breathing related allergies. Big cities can fluctuate when it comes to smoke and other pollutants in the air. Many times how well people can breathe in areas like this will all come down to which way the wind is blowing.
Sometimes people are exposed to bad air quality because of where they work. Many who must work in some factories or foundry type settings have to wear respirators because of smoke or chemical content in the air they have to work in. These work places can cause long term breathing problems also.
Then there are the everyday house fires that people experience. Many times it could be just a small fire where the smoke can be more easily escaped and avoided, but other larger fires can cause big breathing problems especially if a person gets trapped for a time and is over come from the smoke. A lot of people have passed out and then been burned a live because they could they became unconscious and could not escape or make noise so firefighters could find them.
One of the first treatments that are usually received when a person comes out of a fire is oxygen. Cells and tissues in the body can begin to die when they are starved for oxygen. Getting oxygen to a person who has been overcome by smoke is vital to help prevent as much damage as possible. It is important for anyone who has been exposed to a great amount of smoke to be checked out at a hospital to know if the lungs contain toxins from the smoke. When the effects of smoke inhalation are so very dangerous, it makes you wonder why anyone would actually do this to themselves on purpose everyday.

Obesity Epidemic in Children

December 6th, 2009

Miss P. recently took her 8 year old son to see me ” Doctor, this child is just getting too fat. All he does is eat junk food and drink soda ” “So where does he get that sort of food from?” I enquired.

“At home,” she replied.

“So who buys the food?” I asked.

“I do,” replied Miss P. “So doctor what can you going to do about his weight?” This scenario plays out frequently in my office.

I do not have any statistics on our population, but what I have observed in the last 15 years of practice is that the children are getting “bigger.” It is not uncommon to see an 8 year old who weighs 100 pounds or more! Think of this parents, how old were you when you reached 100 pounds? Well I reached that weight when I started University!

We Are Killing Our Children

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 17% of American children and teens ages six to 19 are overweight. Statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate that obesity in children has become an increasing problem in Jamaica.

According to the Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey 2006, one out of every four adolescents between the ages of 15 to 19 years is overweight. This finding is also supported by the monthly clinic summary report from hospitals and clinics across the island, which show that 6.7 per cent of children below the age of five, are overweight.

To make matters worse, according to a recent report in the British Medical Journal, children don’t tend to outgrow their “baby” fat. Researchers found that children who were overweight at 11 were just as likely to be overweight at 16.

Along with the rise in childhood obesity, there has been an increase in the incidence and prevalence of medical conditions in children and adolescents that had been rare in the past. Pediatricians and childhood obesity researchers are reporting more frequent cases of obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and hypertension that once were considered adult conditions.

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including the following:

- Hypertension – Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides) – Type 2 diabetes – Coronary heart disease – Stroke – Gallbladder disease – Osteoarthritis – Sleep apnea and respiratory problems – Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

THE PROBLEM

There are many contributing factors. These include too many soft drinks and junk foods available at home and school; less opportunity for active play inside school and at home; and too much TV. Take a look at many of the increasing number of housing schemes being built in Jamaica and you will see mini-mansions built to the outer limits that the land can hold. This in turn provides much room inside for computers and television but no yard space for children to play. More meals are eaten outside the home, there is easy availability of inexpensive fast food with larger portion sizes and aggressive TV advertising of junk foods. This all adds up to overweight children. In the long run it boils down to this fact: Most children are getting fatter because they are moving less and eating more.

THE SOLUTION

The solution for children is the same as for adults – exercise more and eat less. However, this is a tricky group to bring around. Children are coping with all sorts of complicated and confusing messages and issues, and it’s up to parents and caregivers to guide them.

Early parenting decisions set the stage, for better or worse. Breastfeeding reduces the child’s risk for obesity later in life.

Other things to think about:

Do you put water in the bottle or sippy cup instead of juice? How much TV are you going to allow your child to watch? Are you providing enough opportunity for outdoor play?

Be a good role model. Parents who watch more TV have children who watch more TV, and children eat the way their parents eat. If you dine on chicken nuggets and French fries, your child is likely to do the same.

Instead, opt for baked chicken and salad, and whenever possible make it yourself at home. Always have healthy snacks on hand.

Don’t keep unhealthy foods in the house. If there are no soft drinks, potato chips or white bread available, your child can’t snack on them. (And neither can you!)

Provide whole foods rather than processed foods or beverages. A piece of fruit contains more fiber and nutrients than fruit juice. If your child insists on fruit juice, dilute it by half with water.

Turn off the TV. On average, children watch three to four hours of television daily, and the more TV, the more obesity.

Eat meals as a family. Getting together at the table and sharing the day’s news is not only nurturing, it’s also likely to add fewer calories than mindlessly shoveling in food in front of the TV,

Never use food as a reward or punishment. Don’t offer candy or cookies as bribes for good behavior.

Build more activity into family time. Instead of going out to a movie, go for a walk or go swimming.

Support your child. Overweight kids already feel bad about themselves, so make sure you let your children know you love them unconditionally no matter how much they weigh.

Consult your physician. If your child is overweight, it is especially important to get regular medical care.

He/she needs to be monitored for possible problems such as high blood pressure and/or diabetes. Additionally, your doctor can help you devise a safe exercise program and nutritional plan.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Pose a Heavy Burden, With Threat to Fertility

December 3rd, 2009

Women in Berwyn, Cicero and surrounding Chicago suburbs should note that despite the aggressive promotion of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, the threat of STDs is still serious, especially among women and minorities.

In a January report, the CDC said that cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the United States exceeded 1.4 million in 2007. These diseases continue to be the most commonly reported infectious diseases in the nation, posing “persistent and preventable threats to fertility” in the United States, the report said.

“The widespread occurrence of these diseases should serve as a stark reminder that STDs remain a serious health threat in the United States,” said John M. Douglas, Jr., M.D., director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “Left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause infertility, affecting a woman’s chance to bear children later in life.”

In addition, syphilis, once on the verge of elimination, began re-emerging as a threat in 2001 and increased 15.2 percent between 2006 and 2007, according to the report.

Experts recommend a comprehensive approach to STD prevention through screening, treatment, and behavioral interventions. One approach to preventing such diseases has been to promote abstinence, the focus of many sex education programs in public schools.

Not having sexual relations is obviously the best way to avoid STDs. The CDC reported last year that many teens having sex do not use birth control of any kind. And the former head of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC, Dr. Harold Jaffe, said, “You just can’t tell people it’s all right to do whatever you want as long as you wear a condom. It [AIDS] is just too dangerous a disease to say that.”

Women in Berwyn, Oak Park, Stickney, LaGrange, Cicero, Westchester, and nearby towns who who want to know more about sexually transmitted diseases should contact WomanCare Services in Berwyn, IL.
