Fresh vs. Processed Foods

January 13th, 2010

After turning the television off to do some work, I realized that most of the commercials this morning were of processed foods. In fact, the airwaves are inundated with processed foods-even the so called dietary foods are processed. So what’s the big deal? Well, back in the day before “latch key” children, McDonald’s and other fast foods, there was no such thing as “processed” foods. Foods took time to prepare. People sat down and ate their meals without rushing. Food was a necessity that was cherished and relished because it brought people together. Even snacks were not processed. That’s because snacks were usually a piece of fruit or a home made cookie with some milk. Granted, most women were “stay at home” mothers (mine being one of them). So, she took the time to prepare healthy, delicious meals. In fact, she and my dad were ahead of their time in eating healthy and exercising. Both suffer from high blood pressure, so they changed their eating habits early. When I was a little girl, my mother took my sister and me to Texas to see our grandfather. We stayed for 2 weeks. My sister and I had the best time, mainly because our grandfather spoiled us. Go figure…Anyway, he lived near a river that was teeming with catfish. He knew that we loved fried fish, especially catfish. And for those of you who have only had it blackened, you haven’t really tasted catfish. There is nothing like fried catfish! Anyway, he would get up early every morning and go to this river and catch catfish. He’d come home, clean it and soak it in batter and fry that bad boy up. OMIGOSH! With some grits, eggs and biscuits, that was the ultimate breakfast. Now, PaPaw was a very old school cook. Any time he fried something, he put a big dollop of lard in the frying pan first. Oh, and that included if he was frying bacon! The bacon came from the hog that was slaughtered in the backyard and the lard came from the bacon fat. He loved his grease. And he also smoked his own rolled cigarettes. By now you’re wondering why I’m sharing this childhood memory. Well, my grandfather was in his 90’s when he passed away. He died of emphyzema, not hardening of the arteries. Probably would have lived longer had he not smoked. The point I am trying to make is that back then, in “his day,” there were no processed foods. Everything was fresh. Even when I was growing up, if the food at the supermarket was not fresh, it was in a can or frozen-but it was just food. The Adorr Milkman came by our house and delivered milk, fresh eggs, fresh butter and cheese a few times a week. The Helm’s bakery truck came by every day selling freshly baked breads and other pastries-including donuts that Krispy Kreme wishes they could copy. People in our neighborhood grew their own vegetables and had fruit trees. And we all shared. Even though my elders were serving their children fried foods almost everyday, the food was still “pure.” The veggies served were either fresh from someone’s backyard or from the supermarket. The ingredients on packaging was very simple. It was exactly what you were buying. There were no additional words that no one could pronounce. It was what it was.In this day and age, it may be virtually impossible to cut processed foods out altogether. However, these foods should not be a major part of a healthy lifestyle. The foods that should be a part of everyday livestyles are pretty simple. They’re foods in the food pyramid. These are foods that are pure and necessary for healthy bodies. They are proteins and carbohydrates. Both are necessary for a healthy body, not one without the other. If we continue to get sucked in by the processed food commercials, we will continue to fight a losing battle with obesity. If we go back to basic eating, then most of us Americans will no longer be morbidly obese, but at the very least, healthy.

I am in my mid 50’s and have learned through trial and error how to live a healthy life. From 27 years as a flight attendant, I was aware of the hostile environment early on. I believe I am a true testimony that one can maintain a healthy lifestyle without breaking the budget by purchasing high end products to “look young,” or going under the knife.

Poor Nutrition Equals Poor Health

January 11th, 2010

Nearly 30% of Americans are now considered obese. This statistic is downright startling! Not only is this trend affecting adults, but it is setting a tone and creating an example for our children. Our busy work lives, money problems, stress and anxiety, combined with the ease and price of obtaining processed or fast foods, all lead to people becoming heavier and unhealthier. We lack time, knowledge and a desire more often than not, to plan ahead, prepare our foods or make good choices.

If that wasn’t enough, the amount of conflicting data and opinions that float around make it even more difficult for us to know what is true and what is false, what we should eat and what we shouldn’t. Each day, reports on new studies arise that debunk a previous study done on a food that was supposed to be a healthy choice. It’s nearly impossible for anyone to keep up with the latest scientific news, and as a result, we take the easy route, give up and turn to easy to prepare, but unhealthy meal choices or the ever popular, fast food.

It’s up to each and every one of us to look after our health. If you’re healthy, you have far more energy to spend with family and friends. You can pursue your interests, take a class, go skydiving, camping, hiking or join a sports team. Your life will be fuller, you will be setting a better example, and the time spent on learning about health and exercising, is paid back tenfold over the long term as you live longer and spend more time with your friends and family.

Possible Health Issues

As you age, weight issues become more and more of a problem. Child obesity rates are soaring, and an unhealthy child usually leads to an unhealthy adult. There are a myriad of health problems that you can fall prey to if you’re overweight. Below are just a few of them.

What Can I do about it?

As you can see from the list above, many of the health risks can be debilitating, and can put your life at serious risk. There are a number of things you can do to prevent this from happening to you.

Knowledge is power. Learning about the types of foods that are good for you is crucial if you want to lose weight. A nutrition coach is your best bet, since it’s their job to be aware of what foods are best, and how they affect your body and teach you what you need to know.

Meal planning and tracking are a great way to ensure proper weight management and progress. Your daily diet is the very first thing you should look at if you want to control weight issues. Included in your daily diet assessment is meal timing. Far too often, people believe that proper nutrition is solely the types of foods you eat. Unfortunately, it is not that simple, as there is far more that goes into it but, good nutrition coaching can make the process more manageable. Programs such as those offered by eFitness for Life do just this. We have one goal, help as many people as possible get in shape and learn about proper nutrition, including supplementation and vitamin and mineral intake.

The first step to weight management is recognizing the issue and seeking help. Many people feel embarrassed by their weight, and instead of asking for help, they continue down the same path, which inevitably leads to a lower quality of life, health problems and shorter life spans. By combining proper nutrition, healthy supplementation and exercise, you can control weight issues, lose fat and gain muscle. It is possible, and eFitness for Life would love the opportunity to help you. Together we can make a difference.

By now, everyone should know the importance of physical fitness and fitness training programs, but not very many of us recognize the true value of healthy meal plans as well. Irrelevant of the types of fitness training you use, be sure you have a balanced healthy diet to go with it.

For those that need a little extra assistance, direction or motivation, visit eFitness for Life now and see how our fitness training plans and weekly diet meal plans can help you make the most of your investment, in the shortest possible time, with the greatest return. Health & Nutrition

January 11th, 2010

What are nutrients?

Every molecule in the body is created by Nutrients & there are more than 45 nutrients. These nutrients build molecules, cells, and tissues of the body.

We get energy from Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that we eat. These are called macronutrients. These macro nutrients are broken down / metabolized to give energy to the body. Vitamins and minerals (called micronutrients) are not themselves metabolized for energy, but they are important in helping the macronutrients convert to energy.

What is a healthy diet?

The optimal diet has to be individualized to meet your unique needs. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food pyramid suggests that we use fat “sparingly,” and that our daily diet include 2 – 3 servings of dairy products; 2 – 3 servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, or nuts; 3 – 5 servings of vegetables; 2 – 4 servings of fruit; and 6 – 11 servings of bread, cereal, rice, or pasta.

These are general guidelines. Healthy diet is dependent upon many factors like: age, gender, body size, pregnancy, and status of health. A clinical nutritionist or nutritionally oriented doctor can help you determine what type of diet is best for you.

While you know it is important to eat a healthy diet, it isn’t always easy to sort through all of the information available about nutrition and food choices.  Nutrition has a vital importance to human well-being.  Nutrition should play a leading role to improve our quality of life. Nutrition is a key for reducing your body fat percentage.

Better nutrition means stronger immune systems, less illness and better health.  Better nutrition is a prime entry point to ending poverty and a milestone to achieving better quality of life.  Safe food and good nutrition are important to all.  Basic nutrition knowledge is constantly taking shape every day, producing new diet trends to an ever growing audience of people who want to know the latest and greatest ways to achieve their physical fitness goals.

Get nutrition facts and discover how you can use dietary recommendations to improve your health.  As you grow older, getting a nutritionally rich diet becomes even more important.  The link between nutrition and health is necessary to achieve optimal health.  Good nutrition is a clear path to optimize our quality of life. An important starting point for achieving optimum health is to achieve optimum nutrition and get the proper nutrients from the food.  Diet and nutrition are the principle preventive measures against diseases.

Reading labels and eating a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients is optimal for healthy nutrition.  Research confirms that good nutrition in the early years of life is crucial for human growth and mental development. The study of human nutrition dates back to the 18th century, when the French chemist Lavoisier discovered that there was a relationship between our metabolism of food and the process of breathing.

The field of clinical nutrition has evolved into a practice that is increasingly incorporated into mainstream medical treatment. The term “nutritional supplement” refers to vitamins, minerals, and other food components that are used to support good health and treat illness.

A clinical nutritionist or nutritionally oriented doctor can help you determine what type of diet is best for you. During the initial part of the visit, the clinical nutritionist will ask you questions about your medical history, family history, and personal lifestyle.  In hospitals, nutrition is used to improve the overall health of patients with a wide range of conditions.  Effects of exercise and nutrition on postural balance and risk of falling in elderly people with decreased bone mineral density: randomized controlled trial pilot study.

Proper nutrition is a powerful good: people who are well nourished are more likely to be healthy, productive and able to learn.  Good nutrition benefits families, their communities and the world as a whole. Malnutrition is, by the same logic, devastating.

Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy people are stronger, are more productive and more able to create opportunities to gradually break the cycles of both poverty and hunger in a sustainable way.  Healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, and stroke.  Healthy eating is fundamental to good health and is a key element in healthy human development, from the prenatal and early childhood years to later life stages.

Healthy eating is equally important in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases.  We spend a lot of money on food, but there are ways to cut costs and still serve healthy delicious meals.  When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber.  Breakfast foods should be healthy but they have a tendency to be high in fats and sugar.

We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why ruin a healthy breakfast.  Good nutrition is vital to good health, disease prevention, and essential for healthy growth and development of children and adolescents.  Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet.

Many of us work very hard to eat healthy meals, but struggle with the urge for candy, cookies, cakes, ice cream and anything else full of sugar and sweetness.  Most experts agree that snacking is a part of a balanced and healthy diet, as long as the snacks don’t pile on empty calories.

When your best efforts go awry, and you order pizza or serve another meal that doesn’t exactly fit into a healthy diet, you still have many options for making it healthier.  Just about everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are a very important part of a healthy diet.  Having a well-stocked pantry and refrigerator can be a busy cook’s best weapon in the war against resorting to fast-food, high-fat, unhealthy meals.  Fresh oil is a source of essential fatty acids, which help keep the skin healthy and the hair shiny.

We believe eating sensibly, combined with appropriate exercise, is the best solution for a healthy lifestyle.

Foods

When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber. The goal is to balance negative foods with positive foods so that the combined rating for all foods eaten in a single day is positive.

If you want to restrict your caloric intake without feeling hungry, find foods highest in any vitamin or mineral or lowest in carbs, saturated fats, or sugars.  Our general state of health is partially driven by the types of foods we consume. To make vegetable oils suitable for deep frying, the oils are hydrogenated, so trans fats are commonly found in deep-fried foods such as French fries and doughnuts. Trans fats, beyond a limit, are not good for our health.

Hydrogenation solidifies liquid oils and increases the shelf life and the flavor stability of oils and foods that contain them.  Other sources of trans fats are vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods, and other foods.  Since trans fats increase a products shelf life, many pre-prepared foods and mixes (for example, some pancake mixes and pizza dough) contain trans fats.

The solution: Whenever possible, eat whole, fresh, and unprocessed foods.  When buying packaged foods, put in at least as much time into reading labels and selecting products as you do when choosing a shower gel or shampoo.  A good diet is central to overall good health, but which are the best foods to include in your meals, and which ones are best avoided.

Fast food has become much more popular of late and all over the world the out cry regarding harms of fast foods is on increase.

Be aware that there is little scientific information about the effect of so-called functional foods –foods to which vitamins, minerals, herbs, or other dietary substances are added — despite their growing popularity in the market place and claims of beneficial effects.

Some common foods, including nuts, wheat gluten, dairy products, fish, shrimp, soy, bananas and eggs may trigger allergic reactions.

Fat

Fats add taste to meals and give one a feeling of fullness when eaten.  When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber.  Breakfast foods should be healthy but they have a tendency to be high in fats and sugar.  The human brain is almost entirely composed of unsaturated fatty acids.

You deprive yourself of more than fats when you go for the fat-free or low-fat salad dressing.  We need fats to absorb all the beneficial elements of salads and other fruits and vegetables.  Learn which are the right types of fats, to create beautiful, supple skin, and a healthy body.

Eating more whole foods is a good way to replace many of the processed snacks and foods that have a lot of extra sugar, fat (including trans fat), salt, and other things added to them and a lot of good things taken out, like fiber.  In addition to food labeled fat-free and low fat, healthy low fat foods include most fruits and vegetables.

Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (called macronutrients) are broken down (metabolized) to give the body energy.  For example, lowering fat and cholesterol intake and adding whole grains to the diet can prevent atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries), which can lead to heart disease or stroke.

Fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential components of cells and can protect the heart from, for example, fatal arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm).  Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish (such as herring, tuna, and salmon) have been reported to reduce inflammation and help prevent certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

Safe food and good nutrition are important to all. Basic nutrition knowledge is constantly taking shape every day, producing new diet trends to an ever growing audience of people who want to know the latest and greatest ways to achieve their physical fitness goals.

Did you know that you can drastically decrease your chance of heart disease and cancer by eating a healthy diet and following the recommended nutrition guidelines?

Proper nutrition is a powerful good: people who are well nourished are more likely to be healthy, productive and able to learn.  Good nutrition benefits families, their communities and the world as a whole.  Malnutrition is, by the same logic, devastating.

Diet, Detoxify, Exercise, Supplement, Rest, Sunshine, Positive Thoughts – the 7 Things You Must Do for Your Health

January 10th, 2010

The most important of those seven things is most likely your diet. Sometime around 431 B.C., Hippocrates said, “Let food by thy Medicine.” And in 1930 A.D., Victor Rocine said, “If we eat wrongly, no doctor can cure us; if we eat rightly, no doctor is needed.” Both understood the importance of consuming a healthy diet, which includes the right foods for our body. All foods have different properties, so that you need to know how to plan your diet in order to achieve the correct balance specifically for you. Even if you were to eat only healthy foods, you would need to balance what you eat correctly. Of course, few people eat a healthy diet, which only adds to the causes of possible health problems. If you are overweight (which has its own set of problems) and love to procrastinate, you may be doing irreversible damage to your health. So you must start now to make improvements.

If you are thinking that you want to enjoy life to the fullest by eating what you want, when you want, while saying to yourself, “I’ll worry about the consequences later, at least I’ll be enjoying myself now,” it is time to re-evaluate that thought. Eventually, you will no longer be enjoying yourself. Your health will start declining (maybe this has already happened). It may start so slowly you’ll hardly notice, until one day, you realize that your health has deteriorated, and when you go to the doctor, you may find out you have diabetes, cancer, heart disease, or any other of a number of problems.

Years ago, in a photography class, the professor said, “eliminate as many variable as possible to get the best results.” That applies to diet and health as well. There are many variables in the foods we eat – they may contain dyes, acids, artificial flavors and sweeteners, sugar, texturizers, nitrates, nitrites, preservatives, hydrogenated oils, genetic modifications, and more. They may have been grown in poor conditions and have been sitting on store shelves for days. Then you buy them and overcook them. With all these variables, perhaps you can begin to see why you are having problems. Never forget that we are what we eat (and these days, what we are exposed to in the environment). The food we can do something about. Check labels, and the best advice is to not buy nor consume foods with the items listed above. That would include most processed and fast foods. Once you eliminate these items from your diet, your food will actually start to taste better, although it may take several weeks.

After you’ve started eating a healthy diet, you need to cleanse and detoxify your major elimination organs to assist your body in getting rid of toxins you’ve accumulated over the years. This will help keep you toxin free, feeling great, and help prevent disease.

Your diet will probably be the most difficult thing to change. However, there are many resources available on the Internet to help you with your diet and to stay fit forever. If you’re a couch potato, then exercise may be about as difficult, although you probably have the “rest” thing down to a science. A good place to start, after checking with your health practitioner, might be your local gym or a personal trainer. As for supplements, a good multivitamin is a good base to start with, then you may want to add individual nutrients depending on your needs. As for sunshine, early in the day or late afternoon is best. Once your health returns and/or you start feeling better and have more energy, it will become much easier to think positive thoughts, although you should begin immediately as this will help you reach your goals. Knocking Out Health and Wealth

January 9th, 2010

Your out and your rumbling stomach calls for help. You decide to get a “bite to eat” from a fast food restaurant like “healthy” McDonalds. Well, next time your bothered by a rumbling stomach, here’s something to think about:According to the U.S Department Of Agriculture, Americans waste 96 billion pounds of food each year! That’s a lot of food (not to mention a LOT of wasted money). How many days go by with food just sitting in the fridge and freezer? What ends up happening to all that old food? It gets thrown out and wasted! In order to save our health and money, we should think again before eating out! By eating home food, you can cook much healthier dishes, increase your life span, and save money (who knows what other benefits behold!). You may want to think again before grabbing that SEVEN HUNDRED FORTY Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese from McDonalds. While saving your money is an important factor in becoming rich and resourceful, unnecessary spending is too. We can’t become rich if we spend all our money, boasting about how much we saved on products that we don’t even need! My lesson here? Avoid unnecessary spending. When you spend, do it moderately.

Cigar Smoking is Bad for Your Health

January 5th, 2010

We have all heard of the risks associated with smoking cigarettes, but what are the risks of cigar smoking? Are the risks of smoking cigars just as dangerous, or more so? According to the National Cancer Instituted, regular cigar smoking can result in a major health threat. Scientific research has linked cigar smoking with cancers of the larynx, lungs, esophagus, and oral cavity. Newer research also indicates that cigar smoking may be strongly linked to the development of cancer in the pancreas. Doctors also caution that individuals who regularly inhale while enjoying a cigar are also at greater risk of developing lung disease and heart problems. The health threats of cigar smoking appear to increase dramatically in those individuals who smoke regularly and inhale while smoking. Someone who smokes three to four cigars each day will him or herself at eight times the risk of developing some kind of oral cancer than a nonsmoker. Unfortunately, we do not yet know the health risks of smoking the occasional cigar. It seems clear however that smoking cigars on a daily basis can pose serious health risks.  Many individuals wonder if cigars are as addictive as cigarettes. Many wonder why, for instance, so many people become addicted to cigarettes, and not cigars? The truth is that any tobacco product can become addictive because it contains nicotine. Witness the effects of smokeless tobacco products on individuals. These products, such as chewing tobacco, can become very addictive, simply because they contain tobacco, which in turn contains nicotine. Many cigar smokers do not inhale deeply, thus causing the nicotine to be inhaled superficially. Cigarette smokers tend to inhale, causing the nicotine to be absorbed faster and more readily by the lungs. Even though most cigar smokers inhale the nicotine more superficially, it is still possible to become addicted if the user smokes cigars on a regular basis.  If nicotine is so addictive, why don’t more cigar smokers smoke more often? It appears that more people avoid becoming ‘hooked’ on cigars for several reasons. The most obvious reason is that the nicotine is inhaled much more superficially than in regular cigarette smoking, causing less nicotine to be absorbed by the body. Also, cigars are not as readily accessible as cigarettes. They are viewed by most as a luxury item, saved for special occasions and used infrequently. However, when cigars are smoked on a regular basis, they can become addictive. The health risks of any kind of smoking increase dramatically as frequency of use increases.

Is it as Dangerous to Smoke Cigars?

January 5th, 2010

In the present day there must be virtually nobody on the planet who can claim that they are unaware of the risks to health attached to smoking cigarettes, but are the same risks to be found with smoking cigars, or are they safer or maybe even a bigger danger to health?

The American National Cancer Institute have said that regular cigar smoking has proved to contribute a considerable danger to human health. Research projects have firmly linked cigar smoking with the types of cancer that attack the lungs, larynx, oral cavity and pharynx. More modern conclusions have suggested that smoking cigars may be also linked to pancreatic cancer. Tobacco users who on a regular basis breathe in smoke from cigars undergo a tremendously multiplied chance of enduring both lung and disease.

The hazards related to an individual’s wellbeing have been quantified to increment dramatically in people who smoke who smoke cigars regularly and breathe in the smoke. An individual who smokes merely three or four cigars every day could be raising the danger of being diagnosed with cancer of the oral cavity by 8 times that of a person who does not smoke

Many individuals are curious as to whether smoking cigars is as addictive as smoking a different tobacco product such as cigarettes. For instance an immense number of tobacco users discover themselves hooked on smoking cigarettes yet a much lower percentage of people who smoke, smoke cigars. The truth is, manifestly every tobacco product is going to be habit-forming merely due their nicotine content. Consider for instance the consequences of “smoke-free” tobacco items including snuff and chewing tobacco, these products can quickly get really habit-forming because of the fact they each incorporate nicotine.

The majority of individuals who choose to smoke cigars don’t breathe in the smoke as deeply; consequently any nicotine is inhaled into the lungs in lower amounts. A person who smokes cigarettes broadly speaking breath in the smoke more deeply into their lungs allowing for lungs to readily absorb larger amounts of nicotine. Even allowing for the proposition that people who smoke cigars breathe in lower amounts nicotine, it’s all the same still quite probable that they’ll get addicted to nicotine if they continue regularly smoking cigars on a over a prolonged period of time.

The question is often raised as to why individuals who smoke cigars appear to smoke less often than those who smoke cigarettes? It would appear that people who smoke cigars stave off the addiction process because of several causes. The primary grounds appears to be due to cigar smokers breathing in lower amounts of smoke and nicotine, in addition to this cigars are broadly speaking less obtainable than cigarettes and are looked on a “luxury” or “special occasion” item, associated with rare treats for exceptional events.

Regularly smoking cigars may nevertheless get habit-forming, and fetch with it every associated health risks with those hazards accelerating dramatically as the quantity of cigars smoked increments.

How Your Smoking Affects Your Loved Ones

January 4th, 2010

Your cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking doesn’t only have an
affect on your health. The U.S. Surgeon General’s report “The
Health Consequences of Smoking,” released in 2004, states it has
been proven that smoking (or living with a person who smokes)
can cause disease in nearly every organ of the body, in men as
well as women. This means that every time you “light up” you are
potentially damaging the health of your children, your spouse
and your loved ones.

It is a fact that second hand smoke (also known as environmental
tobacco smoke or ETS) is a major cause of children’s illness. As
children have developing lungs and have higher breathing rates
than adults they run the greatest risk of health effects. In
children under the age of 18 second hand smoke has been linked
with pneumonia, lower respiratory tract infections, upper
respiratory tract irritation, increased severity of asthma and
asthmatic symptoms. It has been associated with sudden infant
death syndrome, middle ear infections, upper respiratory tract
infections (colds and sore throats) and cancers and leukemia.
Japanese researchers just released a study that suggests that
second hand smoke may affect childrens gums. 70% of the children
of smokers had a brownish or black pigmentation of their gums.

Statistics show that approximately 3,000 non-smoking adults die
of lung cancer each year as a result of second hand smoke.
Second hand smoke has been linked to nasal sinus cancer, cancer
of the cervix, breast and bladder. Second hand smoke also causes
an increased risk of death from heart disease.

If you must smoke, it is essential that you protect your loved
ones, especially children. Don’t smoke in your home. If you must
smoke, smoke outside. Do not smoke in your car when your
children are with you. Make sure that childcare providers and
others who work in your home or around your children do not
smoke.

There are many publications available to you free online that
provide information on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and
it’s affects on your family. Visit the US Environmental
Protection Agency at http://www.ep
a.gov/smokefree/publications.html for a free booklet.

The fact is that it’s not only your own health at risk when you
smoke. You quitting will make your loved ones healthier, and
happier too

Texans Wanting To Quit Smoking Have Reason To Hope

January 4th, 2010

When it comes to smoking, there’s little doubt as to the health effects. Smoking is unhealthy.
The real issue for people in Texas, and particularly in the urban areas of Dallas, Houston and Austin, is how to quit and keep from starting again.
Connected to the issue are concerns related to smoking, among them the issue of weight gain that sometimes occurs when people quit.
Although not everyone will gain weight, there is a physical reason for some gaining (on average that amount is only about 10 pounds, according to some experts). In reality, it’s the nicotine contained in cigarette smoke that was responsible for someone keeping their weight low. When they quit, the nicotine (which is harmful) leaves, freeing up the body to return to the weight it would have been had a person never smoked.
Another option for avoiding the possibility of weight gain is to become more physically active and improve eating habits before someone stops smoking. Physical activity will help avoid weight gain because of its inherent ability to increase the number of calories being used by the human body. At the same time, healthy eating choices play a part in controlling the amount of calories a person consumes.
One study showed women who stopped smoking and added 45 minutes of walking a day to their lifestyle gained fewer than three pounds. Exercise is also a way to increase a person’s energy, to promote self-confidence and relieve the stress and depression caused by the lack of nicotine, all while improving a person’s overall health.
Those who think they have “no time” for exercise might consider how they’re spending the time they do have. If it’s watching television or playing video games, some of those hours could be put to better use taking a walk or going to the gym, perhaps bringing along a music player if the exercise itself isn’t enough of a diversion.
When it comes to eating healthy, a gradual change can go a long way toward developing a healthier lifestyle.
Choosing a variety of foods is a good way to start, with choices including grain products, vegetables and fruits. Lean and low-fat foods, along with low-calorie beverages, are good choices, as are low-fat dairy products, lean meats, fish, poultry and dry beans, all of which give someone the nutrients they need without the extra calories and fats. Those with an interest in improving health should also consider avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugars and low in nutrients.
Even with the emphasis on healthy choices when it comes to food, weight gain is hardly a reason for not quitting smoking.
Indeed, the health risks of smoking are far greater than the risks of gaining a modest amount of weight. Even smokers who have health insurance are subject to the effects of smoking, which include increased heart rate and the exposure of some 4,000 chemicals, 40 of which are known to cause cancer.
Smokers are much more likely to get lung cancer, men 22 times more likely; women at least 12 times more than someone who does not smoke. For smokers, the likelihood of having a heart attack is double that of nonsmokers.
The good news is that the human body has the capability of healing from the effects of smoking once a smoker quits. Even within twelve hours of taking a last cigarette, the body begins its repairing process, starting with the lungs and heart. Over time, breathing becomes easier and the classic smoker’s cough begins to go away.
In a world that’s becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, people who quit smoking are making a contribution to cleaner air, especially important for children who are at risk for illnesses because they breathe cigarette smoke coming from others.
Once someone quits smoking, there are strategies to consider that improve the likelihood of remaining smoke-free.
One is to learn how to reduce cravings for both cigarettes and food. One key point is that a craving typically lasts only about five minutes. When those cravings do kick in, try to replace smoking with other activities such as snacking on fruit or chewing sugarless gum as a way to satisfy any sweet cravings.
If keeping your hands busy is an issue, replace the action of holding cigarettes with activities such as doodling, working puzzles, knitting, twirling a straw or holding a pen or pencil.
People who quit smoking can maximize the chance of maintaining their healthier lifestyle by drinking less caffeine (which can make nicotine withdrawal even harder to deal with), getting enough sleep, reducing tension (where exercise can also help), and making sure they get the support and encouragement they need (from friends or groups dedicated to helping people quit smoking).
Finally, If nicotine withdrawal becomes an issue, a discussion with a physician may be in order. Some nicotine replacement products, once available only by prescription, are now available over the counter.
The best way to avoid the harmful effects of tobacco is to not start smoking. But even if you have started and want to quit, there’s every chance of a healthier future.

The Escalation of Public Smoking, the Vestiges From Ash to Ash

The Escalation of Public Smoking The Vestiges from Ash to Ash

 The Allegory

Recent economic expansion in most urban areas did transform the classic reflection of our society and our social order in general.  On the economic side, this positive trend offer’s opportune to business expansion, investment and employment opportunity.  New businesses flourish in the market place.  Among the commerce that we can visibly identify these days to most city centers are; internet shops, specialty item gift store, branded specialty fast foods and soda counters, meal in the box and pack lunch counters, to include the illustrious coffee shops that are highly interiored with furnishing in a relaxing ambiance – that spawn an addicting aroma from a freshly brewed Robusta and Arabica that renovates the entire idea to manipulate part of our lives as far as comfort and indulgence is concern.

In most areas of the shopping malls, in the heart of the city centers, within university campuses, hotel lobby’s, airports, bus stations and seaport areas, and in four corners of most city life – these evolution can be founded that we allowed, we welcomed and embraced the changes.

The positive effect based on the hypothesis of commerce, trade and employment, generates return of excise for the government to fund immediate infrastructure and the basic social services for the community.  However,   hazards brought by these industries as a result should have been anticipated – preserving good health to live a life in a comfortable urban setting.

And why so that the progress that reinvents the face of our present times is being associated with the unending debate that predisposes the deteriorating health in our community?

 The Lure of Obsession

The comfort of city life from the full complement of amenities is a console to many who are; not just the on the go but for all, just as it invites by-standing, a hide away heaven to those who are just hanging out and hanging around.

Internet shops are packed with young generations and the young at heart; where they can explore the world in researches, info finds, and chat. Comforted with tea, coffee, soda, all brands of cigar and cigarettes which most café shop do served in a built-within shopping counter -complement a perfect combination, enjoying the passing of time in ones PC terminal in an open for smoking net café cabins thus, an internet savvy can explore the world by cables for hours; day in day out 24/7.

And these phenomena do influence the global frame.

Among the busiest airports in the world, the comfort of duty free shops, fine resto-bars, coffee shops that serves freshly brewed coffee nectar and others that a traveler can desire seems available.

Duty free shops displays the most sought after brands of smoke and cigars in a more prominent area. Inviting, tempting – this is true to wines and spirits which offers a strong enticement for travelers to stock up to pick more; use as token and gift item.  With the coffee shops at pre-departure lobby – comes smoking as a free for all who dine a mug.

The Reason to Light a Smoke

Social influence somehow premeditates one to hook up with smoking, a call persuaded by the changes in our present times.

Scientifically, tar and nicotine, the end product of cigar is a potent addicting substance.  In fact, a smoker may find the hardest part of trial in his/her life to quit because nicotine and tar is absorb in the body thru the bloodstream  that results to craving forming a habitual cycle.

Of all the diseases associated with smoking, addiction is perhaps the one that receives the least attention. But President Clinton declared nicotine an addictive drug last August. In March, the Liggett Group, makers of Chesterfield and Lark brand cigarettes, admitted that cigarettes were addictive and cause cancer and agreed to pay about $750 million total to 22 states that had filed suit to force tobacco companies to pay for Medical aid for smoking-related illnesses.

Scott Harshbarger, the Massachusetts attorney general and president of the National Association of Attorneys General, told reporters that the Liggett deal “will produce information that indicates major tobacco companies were fully aware that the product they were selling is addictive, that the product they were selling had great impact on public health.”

Other tobacco companies are clearly none too keen on the Liggett deal. For them, nicotine remains what they call a harmless flavor enhancement.

The Result from the Addiction to Smoking

Hooking up with cigar is a continuous habit, smoke will irritate the oral pharynx in our mouth including the nasal septum and polyps; this is the parts of our mouth near to the tonsils area as we swallow – around the vocal cord that connects to our nasal cavity for breathing.

From the irritant smoke comes a harsh voice as a result of the inflamed tonsils, congested nose and swollen polyps.

Bad breath is another effect; the tar and nicotine will discolor the teeth and gums to swell and bleed easily – a ground to invite oral infection.  And this is true to the discoloration of the nails, lips, constant sneezing and clogged up breathing.

The effect of the lungs from smoking is very crucial; hence the alveolar sack is very sensitive from foreign substances. This is where the process of oxygenation of blood takes place.  Therefore, if the alveoli are irritated, oxygenation of blood will be limited that will result to inaccurate circulation processes and poor health.

Continues irritation of the alveoli normally lead to infection commonly caused by tubercle bacilli – the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (cancer of the lungs).

Smoking covers a wide range of effect in the body; poor blood oxygenation will result to poor function of the internal organs and immune system (the body’s defense mechanism against infection) that influence bacteria and viruses to set in – therefore, illnesses associated from the secondary complications are close and possible.

 The Prey

The studies didn’t just point to the ill effects of smoking on those who smoke — non-smokers, too, are apparently affected by the smoke from their friends, family members and strangers who light up in their presence.

A steady stream of reports documented the statistical risks of contracting cancer or suffering from heart disease, even if you’ve never put a cigarette to your lips.

The American Heart Association last fall released a seven-year study showing that never-smoking spouses of smokers have more than a 20 percent greater chance of death from coronary heart disease than those who have never smoked who live with non-smokers. That study gave more impetus to the drive to make workplaces and other public areas smoke-free.

The effects of smoking are hard on the children of smokers as well, the studies say. Dr. Claude Hanet of the St. Luc University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, said earlier this year that a baby born to a smoking mother “should be considered an ex-smoker.”

Hanet’s study cautioned that cigarette smoke was more detrimental with decreasing age.

And a University of Birmingham, England, study, published in the British Journal of Cancer showed a possible link between fathers who smoked and an increased incidence of cancers in their children, while studies in the U.S. showed a possible link between smoking and DNA damage.

 Public Health and Safety

Polluted air – the vestige of smoking; including fumes and pollution caused by the increasing economic spin will result to poor health in our urban life.  Malls and Hotels will no longer be the place of fun relaxation that will limit our social affairs, and death from the young age is now common due to the cancer causing bacteria cultured from smoking.

How to Limit the Vicious Cigar Smoking?

Public places should have a designated corner for smokers; it should be in isolation that will keep its fume and smoke to disperse around the common areas.  Trading and distribution of cigar and cigar by-products should be controlled with maximum limitations; under age boy can buy a pack if cigarettes anywhere – that seems retailers are not sensitive to some active policies to this effect.  Just the same, wholesale purchases of the product for personal consumption should not be allowed.  Warnings in the label that smoking is dangerous to ones health should be expanded – not only in the packaging but to include in public bulletin and other medium – disseminating the information.  Importation levy should be at the upper limit in order to bring the price of cigarette at the highest for common people not to afford thus, limiting the sales and consumption.

Schools should teach health information about the bad effect of smoking to educate our young children.  The media should constantly play apart in serving the general public about the bad effect of smoking.

  In Summary

By 2020, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to reach 10 million, causing 17.7% of all deaths in developed countries. There are believed to be 1.1 billion smokers in the world, 800,000 of them in developing countries.

Smoking is a personal choice, a freedom.  However, it affects the health of others.  Thus, smoking should be abridged to limit the harm for others.

Government should influence to obliterate the monopoly of cigarette and its excess proliferation in terms of product channels and distribution.  Because once the monopoly is crashed to pieces, this cycle will taper even with less effort.
