I Love to Live – Five Reasons for Me to Make Healthy Food Choices

January 18th, 2010

It’s not easy making healthy food choices. Constantly we are being bombarded with commercials parading the benefits of eating unhealthy and giving good reasons for doing so. Thats the American way of life. Work hard and fast, eat bad and fast and the heck with the consequences. We’ll deal with that when the time comes.

The consequences can vary from bad to worse. For me it was a trip down the highway with the sirens blaring, the lights flashing and the paramedic feeding me nitroglycerin. That trip was not fun, as a matter of fact, it was down right scary. But it did get my attention!

Being a young man of sixty five I wasn’t ready to pilot a rocking chair just waiting to die. I wanted to live, be productive and enjoy life. So I decided that if I wanted to live – I’m working on Methuselah’s record – I needed to make some changes in my life.

What I needed to change the most was what I put in my mouth. They say you are what you eat. Eat junk and you will have an unhealthy body. Unless I have a good reason to change, I can be very stubborn. So here’s a list of the reasons I came up with to make healthy food choices.

1}Say Goodby To All The Chemicals

Read the label of that food you are about to serve your family. Look at all the preservatives that are used to keep it from spoiling and better yet look at all those ingredients you can’t even pronounce let alone know what they are.

I have always wondered why they use a name for sawdust that we don’t understand if the stuff is so good for us. You don’t suppose they don’t want you to know they’re putting sawdust in your food do you?

That is one reason I am all for making healthy food choices. All the different preservatives and chemicals that are contained in processed foods couldn’t possibly be good for you.

2)I Want To Savor The Flavor

One of the biggest reasons for making healthy food choices for myself is the flavor. I like to taste food! I like the robust flavor of fresh fruits and vegetables. Canned vegetables don’t have much taste, they tend to be pretty bland thats the reason for all of the recipes that have them swimming in mushroom soup or cheese sauce. You need something to add flavor.

Try some fresh green beans. They are loaded with flavor, delicious to savor and best of all they are loaded with good for you nutrients.

Take an acorn squash, wash it and stick it in the microwave for two to three minutes. When the skin is soft, split in two, scrape out the seeds, add a little butter to each half and you have a food that is so good for you and the best part is it tastes fantastic.

3}I Choose To Eat To Live Longer

Reports of obesity and all the health problems it causes are all over the news these days. From children to adults this problem is getting worse as people turn to fast food for their lunches and dinners.

Obesity puts a terrible strain on your heart, making it work twice as hard to function properly. Causing high blood pressure and all sorts of complications that cannot be reversed unless you lose that weight. Obesity is also directly related to diabetes, which is also on the rise here in America.

Eating healthy makes me feel better and have more energy. If you eat healthy, studies show that you can live longer and have less health issues than someone who does not.

I would like to live to enjoy my grandchildren and one day, their children. I choose to eat healthy. If eating healthy can make you live longer, I choose to eat to live longer.

4}I Choose To Eat To Be In Health

If making healthy food choices helps me to stay in vibrant health then I choose to make healthy food choices. All around me I can see the evidence of making bad food choices. You can too. Just go people watching at any mall or a busy street corner and you’ll be overwhelmed at all the results of making bad food choices.

The great thing about making healthy food choices is that you can start anytime. Like right now! I didn’t until that ambulance ride got my attention. Making healthy food choices is now an everyday occurrence. Every day it gets easier to make those choices, to say no to unhealthy food and to live a healthy life style.

5)I Want to Enjoy My Family

If Making healthy food choices allows me to live longer and be in healthy so that I can enjoy my family then I choose Healthy Food. I have eight children, eight grand children so far and a fantastic wife.

Whats important is being able to spend lots of quality time with my family to let them know I love they so.

I want to be able to spend a lot of time with my wife. When you both work and you’re taking care of the kids you don’t get to spend a lot of quality time with your spouse. By making healthy food choice now I hope, The Lord Willing, I’ll get to spend a lot of quality time with her.

Those are five reason that I choose to make healthy food choices. There are more reasons but you get the idea. Making healthy food choice is a matter of life and death. I choose life! I want to live! What better reason could there be for making healthy food choices!

Eating healthy can be fun and a real adventure into taste explosions. The author has a web site devoted to helping you with making healthy food choices. Take a trip there today and get excited!

Improve Your Health With Natural Foods

January 16th, 2010

Remember the movie that came out recently where the fellow ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? If you saw the movie then you know the results of the month of junk food on the man’s body, mind and spirit. He basically felt and looked awful because of his poor food choices. Are you considering making big changes in your health by eating healthier? If you are ready to make that jump from junk food and quick meals to natural health food, then must accept that it will take a considerable amount of effort and patience on your part.

The United States population has an obsession with junk food; that’s certainly not news. We’re a fat, unhealthy nation, with quick, processed foods far too easily obtainable. All the junk food that you have been feeding your body will have eroded your body; and once you start living a healthier lifestyle, your body is in for a battle of change.

What’s the alternative to fast food? Eating that which Mother Nature provides for us is the first place to start. Natural health foods are usually organic or contain little or no preservatives. Many natural health foods are also low in cholesterol and saturated fat. This means that sticking to a natural health diet by consuming healthy foods will help you eliminate energy reserves and lose weight in the process.

By consuming healthy foods that contain low levels of fat, you lower your level of hunger in the long run, as your body will be getting all of the nutrients it needs from less food. Natural health lifestyle is a way of getting the best out of nature.

You will find that you are much happier and easy going. You will also notice a great change in your mood, since your body is healthy, making you happy. These basic improvements in your health will reinforce your diet, pushing you to eat healthier, lose more weight, and even tighten up your diet further.

Healthy foods will also ensure that you are bustling with energy; and once you have loads of energy you will have to find a way to use it. That will mean that you will find yourself going to the gym or taking up some new hobby, since your energy has to be used up some how. You will be amazed to see how easy it is to actually maintain a natural health lifestyle. All your friends will notice as you become more energetic and productive.

Natural health also encourages positive thinking and is a gradual process. There is no fast and quick solution; only the reality of time. And if you are aware of that, then you know that you are on the right track to making those crucial life changes that will only benefit you in the future.

Fresh vs. Processed Foods

January 13th, 2010

After turning the television off to do some work, I realized that most of the commercials this morning were of processed foods. In fact, the airwaves are inundated with processed foods-even the so called dietary foods are processed. So what’s the big deal? Well, back in the day before “latch key” children, McDonald’s and other fast foods, there was no such thing as “processed” foods. Foods took time to prepare. People sat down and ate their meals without rushing. Food was a necessity that was cherished and relished because it brought people together. Even snacks were not processed. That’s because snacks were usually a piece of fruit or a home made cookie with some milk. Granted, most women were “stay at home” mothers (mine being one of them). So, she took the time to prepare healthy, delicious meals. In fact, she and my dad were ahead of their time in eating healthy and exercising. Both suffer from high blood pressure, so they changed their eating habits early. When I was a little girl, my mother took my sister and me to Texas to see our grandfather. We stayed for 2 weeks. My sister and I had the best time, mainly because our grandfather spoiled us. Go figure…Anyway, he lived near a river that was teeming with catfish. He knew that we loved fried fish, especially catfish. And for those of you who have only had it blackened, you haven’t really tasted catfish. There is nothing like fried catfish! Anyway, he would get up early every morning and go to this river and catch catfish. He’d come home, clean it and soak it in batter and fry that bad boy up. OMIGOSH! With some grits, eggs and biscuits, that was the ultimate breakfast. Now, PaPaw was a very old school cook. Any time he fried something, he put a big dollop of lard in the frying pan first. Oh, and that included if he was frying bacon! The bacon came from the hog that was slaughtered in the backyard and the lard came from the bacon fat. He loved his grease. And he also smoked his own rolled cigarettes. By now you’re wondering why I’m sharing this childhood memory. Well, my grandfather was in his 90’s when he passed away. He died of emphyzema, not hardening of the arteries. Probably would have lived longer had he not smoked. The point I am trying to make is that back then, in “his day,” there were no processed foods. Everything was fresh. Even when I was growing up, if the food at the supermarket was not fresh, it was in a can or frozen-but it was just food. The Adorr Milkman came by our house and delivered milk, fresh eggs, fresh butter and cheese a few times a week. The Helm’s bakery truck came by every day selling freshly baked breads and other pastries-including donuts that Krispy Kreme wishes they could copy. People in our neighborhood grew their own vegetables and had fruit trees. And we all shared. Even though my elders were serving their children fried foods almost everyday, the food was still “pure.” The veggies served were either fresh from someone’s backyard or from the supermarket. The ingredients on packaging was very simple. It was exactly what you were buying. There were no additional words that no one could pronounce. It was what it was.In this day and age, it may be virtually impossible to cut processed foods out altogether. However, these foods should not be a major part of a healthy lifestyle. The foods that should be a part of everyday livestyles are pretty simple. They’re foods in the food pyramid. These are foods that are pure and necessary for healthy bodies. They are proteins and carbohydrates. Both are necessary for a healthy body, not one without the other. If we continue to get sucked in by the processed food commercials, we will continue to fight a losing battle with obesity. If we go back to basic eating, then most of us Americans will no longer be morbidly obese, but at the very least, healthy.

I am in my mid 50’s and have learned through trial and error how to live a healthy life. From 27 years as a flight attendant, I was aware of the hostile environment early on. I believe I am a true testimony that one can maintain a healthy lifestyle without breaking the budget by purchasing high end products to “look young,” or going under the knife.

Does Fast Food Mean Fat Food?

December 24th, 2009

Women say that it is difficult to lose weight, because they do not have time to prepare healthy meals. They work long hours, care for their family and are simply too tired at the end of the day to prepare meals with good nutrition and suitable caloric value. So, eating out becomes a way of life for many families. In addition, the fast-food industry spreads a myth that you need lots of time to cook healthy meals. Most people know that fast food is not good for them, but many do not realize how dangerous it really is. Fast foods are generally high in salt, fat, and refined carbohydrates, and low in vitamins and minerals. High intake of fast food is linked to high body weight. People who ate fast food more than two times per week gained an average about 10 pounds more than those who ate fast food less than once per week. Generally along with smoking, substance abuse and inactivity, fast food presents one of the greatest public-interest health threats to Americans today. When a person is told that fast food is not good for him from a nutritional point of view, he is hardly surprised. The relationship between fast food and the almost epidemic obesity of the American population is a fairly well known fact. Still, the factors that make fast food so popular still seem to be powerful enough to make the majority of the population ignore the obvious risks of poor nutrition and weight problems. Fast food is easily available, relatively cheap, most people find it tasty and filling and it can be purchased fast. There are very few alternatives to the high fat and high calorie menus in the fast food restaurants. Although many seem to be making some attempt to offer low cal alternatives, they end up ruining these offerings with sauces and dressings loaded with fat content. Even though these alternatives are offered, it is still the hamburger and fried chicken that is the king of fast food, and little has been done to reduce the impact of these foods on obesity. There is advertising competition among the fast food restaurants to show that their fast food is least harmful to the consumer and even lists nutrition facts to prove that it is good for you. If you frequently eat out at fast food restaurants, you should consider the nutritional information they now provide to make good choice. It is possible to do that if you carefully pay attention to the details listed. If you want to lose weight or release yourself from an eating disorder, try to eat these healthy types of foods: vegetables, root vegetables, potatoes, lettuce, fruits, berries, fish, porridge and lean dairy products. Unfortunally, many people live on a diet that consists mainly of pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, sweets, soft drinks and chips. If you are doubtful whether you should regularly eat a certain type of food, check if it causes compulsive eating or makes you want to eat even when you do not need more. Avoid all food that has this kind of effect. Read more about fasting days and fasting food at http://www.idealweightblog.com.

Get Healthy Fast Food

December 23rd, 2009

Regardless of whether it is tacos, burgers, or fried chicken; we love it just the same. Fast food has become a way of life for many people. They eat it three times a day. They’d rather have a Big Mac than a steak. But eating at a fast food chain doesn’t have to be bad for your health.

I’m not going to try and tell you that fast food fare is the healthiest food on the planet, but it can be pretty healthy if you make the right food choices.

If you order a burger, get it without the mayo and cheese. By doing this, you can reduce the amount of fat in your meal. If you feel that the sandwich is too dry without mayo, use mustard or ketchup instead.

The processed cheese that many fast food franchises use is loaded with oil and other junk. You might think that cheese is made from milk, but not all of it is. Some of it is made from cooking oil and is less healthy than the milk based kind.

Avoid anything with bacon on it. You can save a substantial number of calories this way.

It is also a good idea to stay away from items that are deep fried. This includes french fries, fried fish, and fried chicken. The oil they use for frying is not the healthiest and can add a ton of fat and worthless calories to your meal.

Most fast food franchises offer salads today. Consider substituting a side salad for the french fries. French fries are okay if you eat them on an occasional basis, but if you make a habit of eating them regularly, you should consider the salad substitute.

Subway promotes their food as being healthier than the typical fast food fare. And if you look at their menu, you can find some healthy alternatives. The fat content and calories for each item is listed in their menu. This is nice if you are watching what you eat.

If you are looking for a sensible and healthy diet plan, we recommend the South Beach diet. It is endorsed by the American Heart Association as a sensible, healthy diet plan.

As with anything involving your health, you should consult with a physician before beginning any type of weight loss regimen.

How Healthy Food Can Effect our Skin

December 5th, 2009

We all want to be healthy, wealthy and beautiful. But when it comes to talking about beauty, some people know a lot about skin care, while others haven’t a clue what our skin is designed for.

When we reach the age that we begin to see fine lines and wrinkles, we start to look for solutions. I may not be a doctor, but I studied anatomy and physiology while at university and I know that our skin deserves all the nutrition we can give it. If anything, we have to feed our skin natural, healthy, raw food instead of processed food if we expect it to stand up to wind and sun.

The skin normally renews its cells every 28 days.  We can talk all day long about lotions and creams, but applying a cream with nutrients to the surface of our skin does not ensure that those nutrients actually penetrate into our skin cells.

I want to share a personal story with you. A couple of years ago my 30-year-old son fell ill and I was shocked by the doctors’ diagnoses. One said that his intestines were abnormally long and the other said he had warm tape!  I couldn’t believe it.

Neither could my son. Rejecting what the doctors had said,  he decided to clean his body. At first, he visited doctors who specialized in natural medicine. They put him on a diet, but all that did was cause him to lose a lot of weight. He then turned to reading about alternative medicine, followed their recipes and instructions, and cleaned his liver. As a result,  he was able to get rid of 30 stones from his liver.

When I visited my son in Europe recently, I was amazed at how he looked so radiant and healthy, his skin practically glowing. He told me that he ate five times a day, eating nothing but natural, balanced food and forgoing anything that had added salt or sugar, as well as no smoked foods or white bread, and drank fresh juice every day.

His story typifies how a clean body and good nutrients can affect our skin. By ensuring that our body has the nutrients it needs, and by including a few key herbs, oils and other remedies in our regular routine, we can not only quickly improve the quality of our skin, but we can also look good as well as feel young and healthy. Essential fatty acids are vital to our skin. Good-quality oils help to keep skin lubricated and healthy overall, since what happens inside your body determines the quality of your skin.

While the main goal is to detoxify our bodies for our own good health and a healthy skin, it is also important to create good eating habits for our children. A child is a mirror of our own habits, and by giving our babies some bites of cake, pizza or overcooked food rather than fruits and vegetables when they start to eat real food, we are creating some very bad habits for them. The answer, of course, is education.

Processing removes essential nutrients from foods, may also destroy nutrients or change them into toxic substances. We need to teach our kids to eat those foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and plums. A wide variety of different foods is always recommended for a healthy balanced diet so that the body receives the vast complement of nutrients it needs for good health. Replace processed foods with fresh ones, don’t eat junk food, don’t drink soft drinks, stay away from sugar, and you’ll be well on your way looking younger.

Simply eat a well-balanced and varied diet that includes more then 25 ingredients per day and have a healthy lifestyle. Believe me, it will help to keep your skin in good condition.  Also learn how to read product labels to understand better what is healthy for our skin and what is not. Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid for Good Dental Health

November 29th, 2009

Dental decay is the most common form of disease known to mankind. It is a known fact that any food that contains carbohydrates, when left in contact with teeth for a prolonged period of time, can cause cavities. The normal micro organisms present in the mouth produce acid through fermentation of the carbohydrate. Unfortunately, we see this happen often. As a practicing dentist, I routinely advise my patients to maintain a healthy diet to prevent such problems.

It is important to remember that altering the diet alone cannot guarantee good oral health. But diet does make a difference when it comes to oral health.

The Dos and Don’ts

Food that contains too much sugar, like candy, leads to acid formation. That, in turn, causes cavities. Repeated exposure to such food can be just as bad as prolonged exposure. Sticky food, chips and taffy, can stay stuck to the teeth and be equally bad. The need for brushing teeth after every meal cannot be emphasized enough. Have children brush their teeth right away after they have candy. Flossing on a daily basis provides extra protection for the hard-to-reach surfaces.

Frequent snacking between meals should be avoided. Diets that contain too much acid can cause damage to the tooth structure. Even healthy foods, like milk and orange juice, contain a lot of acid. Soda or any other carbonated drink can be caustic. Also, when combined with the water in the saliva, these carbonated drinks produce carbonic acid. Both forms can cause chemical erosion and a breach in the enamel layer of teeth.

How to Combat Acid

Don’t let any of the acidic food to stay in your mouth for long. Rinse out your mouth immediately. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to neutralize any acid that might be produced in the mouth. Remember, there is no significant difference between the harmful effects of regular soda and diet soda. The difference between the two is only in the amount of calories and not in the degree of damage to the teeth.

Hard food

If you chew a lot of hard foods, like pretzels or ice, you may develop symptoms consistent with teeth grinding. Chewing too hard may also crack the teeth.Fillings and other restorations can become loose because of the constant flexure of the tooth structure. Eat hard food in moderation.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extremely hot or cold food should be avoided. Both metal and resin fillings expand and contract with extreme changes in temperature. As a result the teeth may crack and the fillings may leak.

Do not eat ice cream and then rinse out your mouth with hot water. Even water at room temperature might not be ideal in this situation. Use cold water to rinse out your mouth and allow the teeth to shift to the body temperature gradually. Sudden changes in the temperature produce minute fracture lines in the teeth. Similarly, do not rinse out your mouth with cold water after drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee. Use warm water to do so.

During Pregnancy

A mother’s intake of calcium is crucial to ensure strong bones and teeth in the fetus.

During Childhood

It is necessary to have adequate amounts of calcium in children’s diet. However, a parent’s responsibility does not end there. In terms of improving dental health, a comprehensive approach has to be taken. On top of ensuring good oral hygiene and adequate diet, children have to be encouraged to brush their teeth after every meal.

Changing the Outlook

I would like to mention that we should not be focused on dental health as an isolated entity. We should start thinking about how dietary habits can affect oral health and most importantly, overall health. Some behaviors that are bad for the body also negatively affect oral health. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to oral cancer and liver failure. Smoking can lead to periodontal disease, oral cancer and lung cancer. Eating too much junk food not only increases the risk of cavities, there is likelihood of obesity, diabetes and cardiac problems. Untreated eating disorders can lead to dental problems like chemical erosion of teeth. Skipping meals also result in increased acidity, and therefore, chemical erosion of teeth and Halitosis.

How to Avoid Buying Junk Food

November 20th, 2009

It makes logical sense that if you don’t buy snacks in the first place, they won’t end up at home. Unfortunately a lot of people use too many excuses for buying and keeping junk food on hand. You may have heard such excuses as “I need them for the kids” or “my husband likes to keep chocolates in the dresser.” These are direct reasons why you can’t help but to eat them now and again.

There are a lot of foods we know we should not be eating, and end up eating them on impulse. You have to learn to control your impulses. But we all know that controlling your impulses with the food in front of your face is almost impossible to deny. It’s a lot easier to go to the kitchen or to the car to get your snacks, versus, going t o store.

We know that impulse means “a sudden desire, urge or inclination.” From that we know that eventually the desire will go away quickly. So it is important to keep those junk foods out of the house, so by the time you would get them, the impulse has already dissipated. It is not good enough to use other people as an excuse to keep junk food in the house. If you are using your kids as an excuse, think about it. You know it’s unhealthy but you’re still willing to give it to your children? If you were a recovering alcoholic, would you keep alcohol around the house? The bottom line is everyone should have a healthy diet.
