Let’s face it, junk food is, as the name suggest, just pure junk. While it tastes great, it has very little nutrition content and it will cause some health issues in the near future.

First, let me say that I am not advocating a total abstain of junk food but a moderation of it.

There are many people out there that are not thinking of their general health all the time when they are thinking of something to eat all the time. With all the fast food restaurants out there many do not think about exactly what they are eating all the time.

There is nothing wrong with eating at fast food restaurants but you really need to watch what you are eating all the time. If you were to think about it what you eat really reflects your general health all the time.

If you are one that eats a lot of junk food then you could be run down all the time and gaining weight on a regular basis. You may not notice it right away but your friends and family will see that you are not doing as well as you used to and that is because of the junk food that you are eating all the time.

If you have been told that you are looking real ragged then you are going to want to stop and look at what you are eating and doing in your life that would make you look ragged. Once you have accomplished and narrowed down a list of what may be making you look ragged then you are going to want to change some or all of your habits. When you make an effort of changing your habits then you are going to see that you are going to end up in better general health than what you were in before.

When you are in good general health you will notice that you are going to have more energy and be more alert to what you are doing and what is going on around you in the end. Your family and friend will also notice that you are doing better and even looking better in the end as well. That is because when you are in good general health you are going to end up showing it with everything that you do so that everyone will notice what you have accomplished in the end.

In conclusion, you should not be eating too much junk food. It does nothing but causing some negative health issues for you.

With the increase in the number of fast food restaurants, it is high time people take more care on their intake. Added to it, they are more exposed to toxins from internal as well as external sources and therefore, should be more watchful on their health. Obesity is one of the problems that are looming large on majority of the people, who are becoming increasingly aware of its consequences and hence dieting has become an indispensable part of their lives. Even those who are of correct weight can adopt dieting by taking the right food at the right time. In fact, if vegetables are taken regularly, it lowers the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer. A diet food can never be complete without fruits. The most appealing factor of fruits is that they are taken raw and are hundred percent natural. Fruits have low calorie and are rich in dietary fiber. Apart from preventing the vitamin deficiency, fruits serve as the ideal food for those who are on weight control and yet want to stay healthy. Occasionally, for snacks and to fill the stomach, nuts and seeds can be consumed because they contain large amounts of vitamins and minerals and fiber that help in metabolism. Diet food does not mean that lovers of non vegetarian need to go all green- there are lean meats or lean chicken and fish that contain protein, essential minerals and vitamins that aid in metabolism.Fat or oil is in the peak of the pyramid, which has to be avoided as much as possible, since fats and oils tend to drastically increase the total intake of calories and thus nullify the very purpose of taking diet food.

Generally, the tendency of the human being is to choose the easier option and fast food restaurants cash in on this lethargy of people. It is quite true that we live in a fast paced world and do not have time to leisurely choose a well planned diet. But, when we look at the harmful effects of fast foods, it becomes highly necessary to plan and cook a healthy food at home. Invariably, almost all the fast food items are rich in fat, high in calorie, over processed killing the essential nutrients, and served with a lot of artificial flavoring, coloring and preservatives. The consequences of such things are obesity, depletion of resistance to insulin, heart disease, accelerated aging, and many more health related problems. The bad effect of fast foods is more on growing children than in adults since their bodies and brain do not easily adapt to the elimination and processing of harmful chemicals that are present in the fast foods. Significantly, fast foods have low fiber content which is essential in our daily food for the elimination of toxins and safeguard against the onset of diseases. Normally, fast foods are prepared with hydrogenated oil which is artificially made to increase its shelf life and effectively produces high levels of Trans fats which is dangerous for the human life and contributes to blood clogging in the artery. Another social aspect is employing underage workers for the fast food restaurants. If fast food can be avoided in its entirety, it is a good option to take foods that do not contain fat like onions, lettuce, tomato and mustard and low fat yogurt and at least balance the food.  The urge to eat fast food can be dampened if some tips are followed. Eating a little before going out will tend to resist taking fast food because a fully empty stomach tempts fast food. Alternatively, a small and healthy snack can be carried around while going out. Instead of taking a fast food that makes the stomach quite heavy, it is better to take five to six small meals every day. Looking at all the aspects, it finally boils down to the fact that fast food is undoubtedly harmful to the body. So, if health is important, it is sane to avoid fast food.

* Look online for quick and easy recipes made with all natural ingredients. Many recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less and only have 5 ingredients. Taking the time to do some recipe research will save your sanity in the long run. Then once you find a “hit” with the family, store the recipe in a book or on your computer.?

* When you cook, make large batches and freeze the leftovers. This way, you’ll already have meals in the freezer that you can just thaw, heat, and serve. No muss, no fuss! This is the opportune way to enjoy “fast” food at home.

3. Eat Slower. Since the brain takes about 20 minutes to get the signal that the stomach is full, if you eat too fast you’ll pack in a lot more food than you need. When you’re still thinking you’re hungry, it’s easy to make the wrong choices about food. If you slow down while you’re eating, you’ll eat less and you’ll still feel full.

4. Make dinner time a social experience. Dinner should be about enjoying your company and taking pleasure in the foods you’re eating.

Do you like to eat junk foods? If you are like me, then you like them very much. Most of them are very tasty and it is really hard to resist them. They are found almost everywhere. But eating excessive junk foods is a food habit that you should really get rid of as early as possible. Why? Before knowing why you should avoid them you should understand what foods can be classified as junk foods.

What are Junk foods?

The foods which have little or no nutrient value can be classified as junk foods. These foods contain very low amount of vitamin, mineral and protein but high amount of calories from fat or sugar. Generally they are highly processed and contain higher amount of fat, sugar, salt and lower amount of fiber. Some of them also contain preservatives and artificial colors. Some popular and well known junk foods are: fast foods, potato crisps, french fries, sauces, salted snacks, chips, very sweet dessert items and carbonated beverage items.

Some Junk Food Facts

You need to know some facts to understand whether junk foods are good or bad for us. Without giving you some facts it would not be easy for me to make you understand the effects of eating these kinds of foods. Now, let’s know some facts about them.

1. Artificial colors and preservatives: Many junk foods contain artificial color and preservatives which do no good for our body, rather they act like poison. Sweden’s National Food Administration is a government food safety agency. With their cooperation a research was carried out at Stockholm University. The research showed that baking or frying carbohydrate-rich foods, such as potatoes or cereals, formed acrylamide. International Agency for Research on Cancer, found that acrylamide induces gene mutations. It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.

2. Lower amount of nutrients: Most of the junk foods have very low nutritional ingredients like protein, vitamin and minerals rather they contain higher amount of fats, sugar, salt. They are also very low in fiber. By eating too much junk food we are giving our body only carbohydrate and depriving it from the other nutrients. Therefore, in return our body will also deprive us from a healthy physical condition.

3. Higher potential of suffering from health problems: If you are habituated to eat junk foods almost everyday or very regularly you are sure to be an overweight or obese person unless you do a good amount of physical works everyday. There is absolutely no doubt about that. This overweight or obesity will lead you to some serious health problems like heart diseases, joint problems, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes. Besides those serious problems they are also responsible for faster tooth decay, constipation, problems related to digestion and tiredness.

4. Junk foods are a real threat for the children and younger age groups: If your children eat too much junk foods, then you should really control their food habit. Because if they eat too much junk food they will eat fewer amount of nutrient foods. This in turn will not ensure proper nutrition for their proper growth and they will suffer from tooth decay, loose bones and gaining overweight in earlier ages of their lives. Junk foods contribute lack of enthusiasm, headaches, tummy aches and poor concentrations to children

In context of the above mentioned facts I think I will be safe to say that, junk foods are bad for our health.My dear friends, I know it will be hard for many people to eliminate junk foods from the daily food list. For our busy daily routines many of us have become so much dependent on them that they would not try to think about not eating these foods. Most of them are easily available and easy to carry. But, considering the side effects you should at least take some fewer amounts of them from now on. Junk foods act like slow poison in our body. It is hard for you to feel the negative effects of junk foods overnight. But, if they are in your food list almost everyday or very regularly then you will definitely observe some negative effects on your body. Only the time to observe the effects may vary from person to person. Therefore it is up to you to make the choice. I hope you will do the best for your body.

With a new school year comes a new policy that will be enforced starting this year. There will be a school junk food ban that would discontinue the distribution and sale of junk food at school. As of last year, schools already started to change some of the food sold in the cafeteria. Granola bars were sold, fried chips replaced with baked chips, soda machines with fruit juice and other healthy food options were made available. Surveys were also conducted throughout the year to evaluate healthy food choices that the students would most like to see.

There has obviously been a lot of controversy over the past few months as to whether the junk food ban would be successful or not, but finally, we will see the effectiveness of the policy once the schools re-open. In my view, it definitely won’t hurt. Though some argue that the ban will be rendered useless as kids bring junk food from home and some go off campus to eat, none argue that the junk food ban would be harmful to the students. After all, with 1 in 5 students being obese today compared to 1 in 20 in the 1970s, something must clearly be done. However, the food ban might cause a few problems for the school cafeteria and moreover for many of the clubs who bank on fundraisers.

Not only that, many clubs who have in the past depended on candy fundraisers and bake sales for their income have already had to start thinking of new ideas to make money. And it’s not going to be easy for them. Candy sales were definitely one of the most profitable fundraisers around and there aren’t many people that would be willing to pay a dollar for fruit bars and orange juice as opposed to Reese’s or Coke. A seemingly beneficial ban really is painful for these fundraisers.

Nevertheless, the outlook is bright. The alternative menu items which include pasta, and deep pan pizza are not horribly disgusting (though most of us found the option of guava juice a bit strange). I feel most kids will continue buying food from the cafeteria either because the parents are too busy or lazy to make lunch for their children, or the kids are just too lazy to drive themselves to some other restaurant. Junk Food Bans In Schools – The Practical Side

In the face of what many see as an exploding obesity epidemic among both adults and children, a growing number of state and regional legislatures are passing laws that prohibit the sale of junk foods in school vending machines and cafeterias.
The new regulations differ from region to region, but the general drift is to reduce the availability of sugar, salt, and fat laden foods and snacks, and replace them with more nutritious healthy foods and snacks.
The money issue
Such good intentions are not always easy to implement. Money raises its ugly head at numerous points along the way, making it difficult to move to more healthy alternatives.
First, vending machine operators naturally prefer to fill their machines with junk food because these “foods” generally have two major advantages over other more healthy alternatives. They have a higher profit margin, and they sell better because kids (for whatever reason) prefer them. This means the vending operators can offer schools attractive profit-sharing incentives when they fill up their machines with pop and candy bars.
As everybody in the business knows, “healthy” vending machines cannot properly compete with “unhealthy” ones until attractive, good-tasting healthy snack products are made available at a competitive price.
And student organizations themselves are split on the wisdom of going “healthy”. Many student groups use candy sales as one of their primary fund-raising methods. According to Laura Thomas, a senior at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, California, “These sales fit the needs of the clubs because they can sell at school, during lunch or in class. If clubs were forced to switch to selling other things like calendars or magazines, they would have to drastically shift their target market. Chances are students simply wouldn’t be interested in those new products as much as they are in candy.”
In other words, not allowing junk food sales by student groups would make fund-raising programs in the schools much more difficult, and would threaten the current fund-raising structure that feeds cash directly into the school program. Of course not everyone agrees this would be a bad thing. As another California student, Leah Karlins, a junior at Branham High School in San Jose said “it seems no one is asking the obvious question — why do our schools need to sell brownies to pay for sports teams and clubs?”
Meal changes don’t come easily
There are similar problems when it comes to changing cafeteria menus. Not only is it usually less expensive to offer french fries every day, but it is much easier, takes less planning, and will probably be more broadly accepted by the students doing the eating.
Menu changes usually involve a good deal of experimentation and have to be introduced slowly. Students are not going to switch to “eating healthy” without a relatively long and gradual transition period.
And of course cost is always a factor. Most school boards in the U.S. receive a meal subsidy from one or more levels of government, so they must keep their costs below that level. At the same time they must meet the gradually tightening nutritional standards. These standards are sometimes the result of intense industrial lobbies that appear to encourage “healthy” change, but can also make it difficult.
For instance, long-standing policies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture tend to discriminate in favor of diets that are heavy in meat and milk. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine notes that meat alternatives are not subsidized by government, while meat and meat products are.
The result is that a low-fat, low-cholesterol veggie burger is often twice as expensive as a high-fat hamburger. The same thing happens with milk. Milk production is subsidized, but not the production of low-fat alternatives. And milk is even mandated within the U.S. federal school guidelines which require schools to offer only milk to drink, and include it in the base price of the lunch meal.
The bottom line is that the problem of poor eating habits among children is not something that is likely to go away quickly. While schools may dominate a child’s daily activities, they still only account for one meal a day. So what the children are doing for the rest of their meals is even more important.
This fact supports the claim that what schools really should be doing is teaching about nutrition and the importance of physical activity, and using school programs to set an example — as a matter of “putting your money where your mouth is”.
The objective should be to have these habits carry over into the rest of their choices and activities. Lunch programs, vending machines, and school activity programs are not solutions to the problems of overweight and inactivity. They primarily serve as examples of a better lifestyle, and point children in a healthier direction.
