Eating Organic and Whole Foods Will Help You Lose Weight

January 17th, 2010

Visit a bookstore for weight loss tips and you’ll likely be overwhelmed by the actual number of diet plans available. The same is true for browsing the Internet for free diet plans. With so many different weight loss programs to choose from, it’s hard to decide which weight loss plans actually work and are good for your health. Many of the programs available are simply diet scams that have been devised to make money off of people looking for a simple plan to lose weight fast.
The Importance of Healthy Weight Loss Program
It’s best to use a common sense approach to dieting and weight loss. Weight loss requires lifestyle changes. Choosing a diet that is too restrictive or advises you to avoid certain food groups may help you lose weight initially, but they are not ideal for a long-term dieting and weight loss program.
Certain foods can actually endanger your health. Beware of artificial chemicals i.e., MSG (monosodium glutamate), preservatives and sweeteners. If you can’t pronounce the items on the ingredient list, don’t eat it. Don’t feed them to your kids, either. Harmful substances effect brain function, interfere with normal body functions are addictive and cause adverse reactions. Instead, choose healthy organic and whole foods for your family.
Limit Fast Foods and Sweets
It’s best to limit snack foods and fast food while following a weight loss program. While it’s necessary to moderate whole food groups like carbohydrates, protein or dairy, it’s also important to limit or eliminate sweets in your diet.
The problem with including fast foods and sweets in your diet is not only how difficult it makes losing weight, but also how these foods actually increase cravings and cause you to eat more in general.
You may think nothing of indulging in a piece of cake now and then, but if it leads to eating poorly for the entire day, week or month, then it’s definitely not worth it. A cheating moment can snowball into a binge that is difficult to get back under control.
Whole Foods for Healthy Weight Loss
Weight loss isn’t easy and there are no diet pills, shakes, fat free foods, sugar free foods, artificial sweeteners, or any other products that will change that fact.
Many companies have tried to keep up a with the top 10 fad diet trends; such as the South Beach diet and the Adkins diet. They’ve made fat free, reduced fat and light versions of their original products. The problem with these products is they lose their taste without the fatty ingredients.
That’s where the artificial chemicals and other sweeteners come in to play. Companies use these unhealthy additives to make their products taste better. Even though they may taste better, they are not any better for you, and may actually be worse, than the full fat versions.
The best way to lose weight is to adopt healthy habits. This doesn’t have to happen overnight. Start by making small changes in your diet. Reach for healthy organic and whole foods, instead of processed snacks and skip the fast foods. The closer to its original form a food is the better. Eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, steamed brown rice and grilled fish or chicken. Keep things simple and limit condiments and dressings that add unnecessary calories.
Don’t worry if you can’t afford organic foods or you have trouble refusing some of your favorite foods at first. Concentrate on limiting the quantity of food you eat and gradually increase the quality of the food you eat. Only when you follow a healthy, simple plan to diet like this and incorporate exercise will you lose weight and keep it off.

Fat Loss: Fast Food Junkie to Health Style Savvy

January 5th, 2010

When overweight individuals are told they have to change their eating styles, the dread that comes with this thought is at varying degrees. In other words, some people’s pre- weight loss eating habits are not as bad as what someone else’s is. Their lack of losing fat may have to do with some other factors. It’s the fast food junkies that face pure panic when they are told they must change their eating habits. Part of the problem, and part of the failure for some people is they try to make the transition too quickly. Just as some people can quit smoking cold turkey, while others have to wean themselves off.

If you have tried all kinds of methods to try to switch to a healthy diet and it has failed, then try this slower but perhaps more effective method.

Start in the morning and plan your meals for today. Don’t consider what is good or what is bad for you at this particular moment. Don’t even think about the fact that you are starting a life style change. Now write out a list of healthy foods for each of those meals. Use five food items for each meal. Next, pick out one healthy food that you like the best out of each one of the categories. Now remove one of the unhealthier foods and substitute it with one of the healthy foods in each group. Continue doing this on a regular basis  until you have eventually replaced all of the unhealthy foods with the healthy ones. This is just one of the many innovative ways you can become health style savvy. Don’t worry if it takes a while between each transition that’s fine, just stick with it, eventually you won’t even remember what fast foods were.  You will naturally have moved to healthier eating.

Can I Eat Some Fast Food And Still Lose Weight?

January 5th, 2010

Because there is so much fast food out there that is loaded with fat, lots of sodium, and is high in calories, many people believe the only way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight is to stay away from fast food restaurants.
Yes, it is true that a fast food meal that includes a burger, fries, and a soft drink is not healthy and has too many calories in it. But there are fast food options that are healthy and okay to have. Here’s one way to think of it. Most weight loss experts today say having 5 to 6 small meals a day is better then having 3 larger meals and that skipping meals is a bad idea because it leads to binging later on in the day. So is it better to skip lunch because you are busy and only have access to a fast food restaurant? Or should you go to that restaurant and make the healthiest choice you can? (And while it’s true that you cannot always get super healthy food at a fast food restaurant, you can almost always find a reasonably healthy choices.)
I’m not saying you have to walk into that fast food restaurant and ask them for a bowl of plain lettuce either. What are some decent choices?
• Go Mexican but don’t have the taco salad in the edible bowl. That taco salad at Taco Bell that you probably think is a healthy choice contains 860 calories and 46 grams of fat. Even without the edible bowl, the salad still has 490 calories and 25 grams of fat. Instead consider having something at Taco Bell with a soft flour or corn tortilla that is done in their “fresco style,” which means they use a salsa of tomatoes, onions, and cilantro in place of cheese and sauce on an item. Two grilled steak tacos done in their fresco style contains 340 calories and 10 grams of fat. Two of their ranchero chicken soft tacos are 340 calories and 8 grams of fat (nutrition information for Taco Bell was found at: http://www.yum.com/nutrition/documents/tb_nutrition.pdf). If you are at any fast food Mexican restaurant, look for similar choices; items with flour or corn tortillas that are not deep fried; salsa toppings instead of ones containing cheese, cheese sauces, and sour cream; low fat cheese instead of full fat cheese if you really want the cheese.
• Have a burger if you really want one, but have the regular hamburger, skipping that slice of processed American cheese. You know the fries aren’t a healthy choice, a side salad with light dressing is much better. But if you have to have fries (and once in a while is okay even when trying to lose weight because a person is much less likely to be successful on their diet if they completely forbid all their favorite food) have the smallest size available. You may have to order the kid’s meal to get a small order of fries, but that’s okay. Make your beverage water (most fast food restaurants have bottled water now which is great for people on the go) or a diet soft drink.
• Grilled chicken sandwiches are okay if you skip all the extra toppings; deep fried chicken sandwiches are bad. People have a tendency to think a chicken sandwich is healthy because chicken is healthy. But once that chicken goes for a swim in the deep fryer, it’s not so healthy. A grilled chicken sandwich from Wendy’s has 370 calories and 8 grams of fat. A deep fried chicken fillet sandwich from Wendy’s has 470 calories and 16 grams of fat. If you’re thinking their mandarin chicken salad is a better choice, it has over 500 calories and 26 grams of fat.
While eating fast food is not something any health expert will recommend having for every meal every day of the week, a person can eat at fast food restaurants some of the time still lose weight. It’s all about being informed about the calories and nutrition of the food available at restaurants and making the best choices possible.

Wean Yourself Off Fast Food for Good

December 28th, 2009

If you’ve eaten out at fast food restaurants for a long time, or frequently have to resort to fast food because of your busy lifestyle, you’ve probably suffered the side effects.  Weight gain, fatigue, poor health, obesity, and susceptibility to disease are only a few common ones.  You probably didn’t think your diet could be causing any of these side effects if you’ve experienced them.  But research has proven that fast food does in fact contribute to poor health. It’s also been recently proven that fast food is addictive because of the chemicals and additives that are put into it.  Fast food triggers the same pleasure center in our brains that drugs do.  Isn’t that a weird thing to think about?  That food could actually be a drug? If you’ve truly committed to wean yourself off fast food, that’s exactly what you should do.  Going cold turkey is possible, but it’s more likely you’ll experience withdrawl symptoms – and quite possibly set yourself up for a failure binge.  Your best bet, and this is true any time you’re trying to break a bad habit, is to gradually reduce the number of times you eat out. If you eat at fast food restaurants once a day, cut back to 3-4 times a week.  As you start to get the unnatural additives and chemicals out of your system, you’ll find yourself craving it less.  Then, it will be easy to cut back to eating at a fast food restaurant once a week – and eventually, you won’t want to eat out anymore at all. Now, it’s important to substitute nutritious food that will keep you satisfied, and not to think that just because you’re not eating at fast food restaurants, you can’t still enjoy food.  That is definitely not true. But think about this.  A McDonald’s Ham Egg and Cheese bagel has 550 calories and 23 grams of fat – 8 of which are saturated fat (the bad kind that contributes to heart disease).  If you took just five extra minutes to fix yourself a homemade bagel with light cream cheese or butter, you could cut that down to 300 calories.  Or better yet, skip the bagel and have whole wheat toast with peanut butter – which cuts down to 200 calories.  And best of all, you’re saving your body the extra work of trying to process all those unnatural things that go into fast food. The key to weaning yourself off fast food is commitment.  You have to really want to see improvements in your health, and be devoted to stopping those bad eating habits.  When you stop and think about it, it’s not too far from making a commitment to being drug-free, after all.

Dieting: Fast Food Do’s and Don’ts

December 27th, 2009

With our busy schedules we just can’t help but to stop at a fast food restaurant once in a while. Taking kids to school, working a 9 to 5 shift and maintaining a clean household can put quite a strain on our time. That is why a drive-through food service seems very appealing at times. When we find ourselves in this particular situation, is there anything on the menu which will not make our waistline plump?

When you are at a fast food restaurant, there are certain factors to take into consideration. Of course anything fried should be immediately eliminated from your list of choices. We all know that fried food is laden with calories, cholesterol, sodium and numerous other preservatives. And keep in mind that your kids should also stay clear from anything fried. French fries, onion rings, sodas, and super-size meals are all bad news. They will quickly rob you of your health and of your slim waist. While at the drive through window, you should opt for a salad with dressing on the side or a grilled chicken sandwich without the works (no mayo, bacon, etc.).

If you decide to skip the drive through and head to a sandwich shop, there are also certain valuable tips to keep in mind. First of all choose the best bread (whole grain is by far the best). You should also opt for lean meats, such as turkey breast or chicken breast. And instead of mayo and bacon, try adding more veggies to your sandwich. However, the most important thing to remember about fast food is to never make it a daily habit. If the diet you are currently consuming consists of more than one visit to your local fast food joint, you should rethink your meal plan. Because if you want to lose weight, no diet pill will help you do so with bad eating habits such as this one.

Fast Food: the Good Vs. the Ugly!

December 26th, 2009

Sometimes we just can’t help but to stop at a fast food joint. We may be traveling or simply running late with our daily chores. Our busy schedules often give us very little time to prepare healthy meals at home. So when we do find ourselves in a drive through, is there anything we can order that will not make our waist line suffer?

Well, if you absolutely have to eat fast food one day, there are certain factors to take into consideration. For instance, calorie wise, the red headed girl with the pigtails is the best place to go. Once you are there, try to order either a side salad or a grilled chicken sandwich without the mayo. You can also opt for a small chili but you should absolutely stay away from the loaded baked potato and fried foods.

When you go to a fast food sandwich joint, try buying a turkey or ham sub on wheat bread; stay away from mayo and be sure to add plenty of veggies. Try to avoid the calorie packed meatball and Italian subs. As for hamburger joints, be sure to stay away from fried! French-fries, onion-rings, sodas and supersized meals are all bad news. They quickly rob you of your health and of your slim waist. Try to order a side salad with fat free dressing or a grilled chicken sandwich. And whatever you do, don’t make your fast food joint visits a daily habit. We all know that the food is delicious and ready in less than five minutes, but the outcome of that type of a diet is anything but good! And if you need a little discouragement, get on the World Wide Web and look up the nutrition facts of some of your favorite fast food meals. I guarantee you will be shocked!

Get Healthy Fast Food

December 23rd, 2009

Regardless of whether it is tacos, burgers, or fried chicken; we love it just the same. Fast food has become a way of life for many people. They eat it three times a day. They’d rather have a Big Mac than a steak. But eating at a fast food chain doesn’t have to be bad for your health.

I’m not going to try and tell you that fast food fare is the healthiest food on the planet, but it can be pretty healthy if you make the right food choices.

If you order a burger, get it without the mayo and cheese. By doing this, you can reduce the amount of fat in your meal. If you feel that the sandwich is too dry without mayo, use mustard or ketchup instead.

The processed cheese that many fast food franchises use is loaded with oil and other junk. You might think that cheese is made from milk, but not all of it is. Some of it is made from cooking oil and is less healthy than the milk based kind.

Avoid anything with bacon on it. You can save a substantial number of calories this way.

It is also a good idea to stay away from items that are deep fried. This includes french fries, fried fish, and fried chicken. The oil they use for frying is not the healthiest and can add a ton of fat and worthless calories to your meal.

Most fast food franchises offer salads today. Consider substituting a side salad for the french fries. French fries are okay if you eat them on an occasional basis, but if you make a habit of eating them regularly, you should consider the salad substitute.

Subway promotes their food as being healthier than the typical fast food fare. And if you look at their menu, you can find some healthy alternatives. The fat content and calories for each item is listed in their menu. This is nice if you are watching what you eat.

If you are looking for a sensible and healthy diet plan, we recommend the South Beach diet. It is endorsed by the American Heart Association as a sensible, healthy diet plan.

As with anything involving your health, you should consult with a physician before beginning any type of weight loss regimen.

Starting a Diet for Children is Not that Hard

December 9th, 2009

Now days you see an abundance of children that have become overweight at such a young age.  The basic physical exercise is a burden for them, such as jump rope, hopping, running or just playing. It is necessary for these children to review their intake of food and determine how to implement a healthy diet into their lives.  A healthy diet also means a better self image of themselves. Talk to your physician firstThe first step in any diet change is to consult your physician.  Then your physician can determine how to help you implement a healthy lifestyle.  The doctor may send you to a nutritionist or monitor the weight on their own.  As parents, we shelter our children from any harm and teach them the rules of etiquette.  Now it’s time to teach them the rules of living a healthy life.  We may find that we are learning something new ourselves.  Here are some tips that may help your child to follow a diet. How to reward a child without using foodThe first simple step is to never use any kind of food as a reward or for corrective measures.  Pack your child’s lunch so that you know they are making healthy alternatives.  Check the schools vending machines to see what they offer and go over them with your child as to see what is a healthy choice.  Keep the junk foods out of the house and out of their bodies.   Always have healthy snacks available such as fruits, cut up veggies, low cal dressing, yogurts, and nuts.  The list is endless.  You will find that there are many sweet alternatives in fruit.  Be careful of how much fruit you eat as well.  They contain natural sugars. No more sodaNo more soda and high fructose juices.  Your child can learn to drink water or low sugar sweetened drinks.  Build an appreciation for water together!  Water also helps to keep your body hydrated and to keep your bellies feeling full. Exercise can be fun instead of boring.  Turn on some music and dance around the house.  Play tag outside.  Go for a bike ride.  Play a sport.  Involve yourself, as a parent, with your children and they will learn by example.  Get fit together!  Diet and exercise together. Watch your child’s self esteem riseWatch your child’s self esteem sky rocket when the weight starts to come off.  They will be happier and have a different attitude towards life and friends.    Their self confidence will carry them to all sorts of new heights! There are special camps that you can look into if you feel that you need more help.   These camps are comprised of specialists to help modify lifestyles and help your child become healthier. Don’t forget that if you work together at diet and exercise, you all should have a healthy longer life!  Lead by example!
