January 16th, 2010

Remember the movie that came out recently where the fellow ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? If you saw the movie then you know the results of the month of junk food on the man’s body, mind and spirit. He basically felt and looked awful because of his poor food choices. Are you considering making big changes in your health by eating healthier? If you are ready to make that jump from junk food and quick meals to natural health food, then must accept that it will take a considerable amount of effort and patience on your part.

The United States population has an obsession with junk food; that’s certainly not news. We’re a fat, unhealthy nation, with quick, processed foods far too easily obtainable. All the junk food that you have been feeding your body will have eroded your body; and once you start living a healthier lifestyle, your body is in for a battle of change.

What’s the alternative to fast food? Eating that which Mother Nature provides for us is the first place to start. Natural health foods are usually organic or contain little or no preservatives. Many natural health foods are also low in cholesterol and saturated fat. This means that sticking to a natural health diet by consuming healthy foods will help you eliminate energy reserves and lose weight in the process.

By consuming healthy foods that contain low levels of fat, you lower your level of hunger in the long run, as your body will be getting all of the nutrients it needs from less food. Natural health lifestyle is a way of getting the best out of nature.

You will find that you are much happier and easy going. You will also notice a great change in your mood, since your body is healthy, making you happy. These basic improvements in your health will reinforce your diet, pushing you to eat healthier, lose more weight, and even tighten up your diet further.

Healthy foods will also ensure that you are bustling with energy; and once you have loads of energy you will have to find a way to use it. That will mean that you will find yourself going to the gym or taking up some new hobby, since your energy has to be used up some how. You will be amazed to see how easy it is to actually maintain a natural health lifestyle. All your friends will notice as you become more energetic and productive.

Natural health also encourages positive thinking and is a gradual process. There is no fast and quick solution; only the reality of time. And if you are aware of that, then you know that you are on the right track to making those crucial life changes that will only benefit you in the future.

5 food to avoid for a healthier heart

January 15th, 2010

I’m all about a healthy heart. I became more interested in heart health after my doctor told me my bad cholesterol and triglycerides were high a few years ago. After that I started making some changes to my exercise and eating habits that have helped me bring my bad cholesterol and triglycerides back into their normal range. One of the things that I read about and has helped me is a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains and low fats. I found that these are essential in decreasing the risk of heart disease. I also found the foods to avoid. These are:

1. Fast Foods: Now I love a good burger and if you stick to the burger it’s not so bad. But when you add them to the fries or onion rings and the fast food shakes I used to drink, it’s so easy to understand why you want to avoid them. It’s because they contain high levels of saturated fats and trans fats. Trans fats are the worst because they contain hydrogenated oils. Moreover, these fats have been found to lower the HDL (good cholesterol) in the body. 2. Oils: Today I use pure olive oil for my salads and cook with canola oil. Both of these have substantial heart-healthy benefits. But their counterparts – coconut and corn oil, are full of saturated fats. These oils are utilized in most fast food restaurants and many people use them for home cooking. Coconut and corn oil are best avoided as they increase the risk of heart disease. 3. Dairy: Before we start I want to tell you I love milk products. My father was from Wisconsin so I grew up drinking lots of milk and eating lots of cheese and sausage. The problem is that saturated fats increase the LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. Whole milk as well as other whole dairy products contain these saturated fats and have the same effect. In lieu of whole dairy products use 1% milk, skim milk, and low-fat dairy products. These help you to avoid high cholesterol levels and the accompanying increased risk of heart disease. 4. Meats: You know an interested thing has happened during this new economy, a well-known fast food restaurant (name begins with an M) has increased its profits substantially. That’s because people are taking advantage of those low cost meals. The problem with meats such as hamburger, bacon, and packaged or deli meats is that they contain high amounts of saturated fats. Just substituting these meats with chicken burgers, turkey burgers, turkey sausage, and other lean meat products can make all the difference in reducing your cholesterol level and your risk of heart disease. 5. Trans Fats: We already talked about this a little above. This is probably the most serious offender as regards to cholesterol and heart disease. In fact, efforts are under way by many manufacturers to completely eliminate this fat from their baked goods. However, not everyone is following this lead and it makes it necessary for you to check the label before you purchase products like cookies, cakes, butter, and other food products that contain some form of fat content. So there you have it, 5 foods to avoid for a healthy heart. Start eating right today and you’ll add more life to your years! If you want to lose weight and get fit I have a FREE e-Course.

A few years ago, I got divorced, I quit my job, both my parents died, my daughter was fifteen going on thirty and I had to clean up a house full of the junk my parents had accumulated by living in a house for 50 years. I couldn’t sleep, my head constantly hurt, my cholesterol was 230 and I was 25 pounds overweight. My subconscious was running away with my mind and making me nearly crazy. To say the least, I was a real mess. Now I should have known better because for the last thirty years I’d been studying how to improve my life and how to set goals and achieve them but it didn’t change my weight. I kept overeating, eating the wrong things and using the wrong type of exercises.
As a result I changed my approach and went back to training in Tai Chi and Chi Kung at least twice a day. These are two Chinese martial arts that help develop internal energy. I also began recording and listening to hypnosis sessions I had developed over the last 30 years. It took a while but my weight came down, my stress level is down and my life is more stable. Recently I had a physical. My total cholesterol was 172 and my HDL’s (good cholesterol) was 42. I weigh 171 pounds and I’m feeling fantastic.

Super Supplements for Super Health

January 14th, 2010

First, I’d like to discuss whether you really need a health supplement, let alone any of the range of super supplements. Many people are too busy to eat well. A frozen packet from the supermarket, thrown into the microwave may be their staple diet. A regular visit or three, to a fast food outlet may complete the week. Even eating out may not go further than the local fish and chip shop. Can anyone, in their wildest dreams, consider this a healthy diet? What are the problems?

Even if you don’t fall into the above category, lets have a look at what is considered a healthy diet.Typically, if you eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, you probably consider your diet is healthy. But did you know that cooking destroys many nutrients and alters others? For instance broccoli has an amazing array of health promoting nutrients, most of which are destroyed in cooking. Even in light steaming. Most people think they need a lot of animal protein, so tend to consume it more than once a day. But did you know that animal protein makes your body acidic? You should be slightly alkaline for optimum health. Many health problems, including cancer, cannot live in an alkaline environment, but thrive in an acid one.Fruit is often cooked, again destroying vital nutrients. But sugar is frequently added too. Sugar is a processed food, so is hard to digest. It also contributes to your overall acidity. So lets suppose you’re eating a diet which is high in raw fruit and vegetables. You’re feeling pretty righteous about it. But is it adequate? It might be if it wasn’t for two important factors. One is that most food grown today is grown for good looks rather than nutritional content. There is a saying that the west has never been so well fed but so under nourished. On the other hand, certified organic food is grown for the high nutrient content, and looks come second. So eating organic isdefinately more healthy, but is it enough? The second factor is your modern lifestyle. Most of us are under stress from family and/or work, live in a polluted environment and don’t relax anything like as often as you should. So even if you are eating a lot of raw, organic produce, you’ll still need a health supplement.Having established that practically everyone needs a health supplement, which one is the best value for money and the most effective? Most of the health supplements on the market are made in a laboratory. In other words, they are synthesised. That’s why you can purchase isolated nutrients, such as selenium or iron or calcium. You body can’t utilise synthetic nutrients. At best, they are expensive poo. At worst, the nutrients can hang around in your body to cause problems later. For example, synthetic calcium supplements are thought to be one cause of kidney stones.Another common source of a health supplement is minerals. OK, so naturally occurring minerals are a bit better than synthesised nutrients, but again, your body doesn’t know what to do with them.Your body is complex. Nutrients co-dependent on each other. For instance, calcium needs phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A and D to be utilised efficiently by your body. Plus a myriad of trace elements and other nutrients.Too much iron depletes your copper levels. So what’s too much? You evolved to gain all your nutritional health requirements from food, so the best way is to duplicate this. This is naturally balanced and easily digested and utilised. As we have already discussed, even certified organic food may not be sufficient to provide for all your health requirements in this stressful and frantically busy world you live in.Enter super supplements!Super supplements are made from naturally occurring, nutrient dense plants. And the best plant in the world for this is algae. Blue green algae to be precise. It’s also called spirulina.Algae takes up whatever is in the water, so you can get healthy and unhealthy algae.Healthy algae grows in mineral rich water. Probably the best source of naturally occurring mineral rich water are mountain streams and lakes, untouched by human pollutants.Spirulina is very popular now, but before you rush down to your health store to buy one of the top super supplements, there are a few things to consider.Such as where does the algae grow? Many are grown in specially made farms, with concrete bases.Maybe that doesn’t matter. Many are fertilised with inorganic fertiliser. To me, that’s a definite turn off. Then there is the processing. Many are heat treated to evaporate the water off.Heat, as in cooking, destroys vital nutrients. So, lets recap.

Wishing you a healthy journey!

Drinking Water and Fasting For Optimum Health

January 7th, 2010

I have been teaching yoga for more than 30 years and in recent years I have specialized in using natural treatments to prevent and cure diseases. One of the important factors in maintaining health and in curing illnesses is to learn how to drink water in a therapeutic way. If you would like to find out how use water in a curative way, then read on and you will find the basic methods that could transform your life. If you are curious about fasting, then the article also explains how this simple practice can help you greatly.
1. The Correct Method of Drinking Water
We drink water everyday, but why is it that some people enjoy good health from drinking water whereas others do not? The answer is: there is technique to drinking water!
Most people drink too little water; this is why their health is not good. How much should we drink then? The answer is that most people need to drink at least four litres of water a day. The amount should be increased if you have skin problem.
Apart from being a constituent part of our body cells, water also has multiple roles. For example it maintains an adequate flow around and between cells, and takes part in many chemical functions in the cells. Most importantly, water disperses nutrients and carries wastes out of our body, including toxins.
Hence if you drink very little water, it would not be able to carry out the function of discharging wastes properly. The best time to drink water is immediately after you rise from bed in the morning. At this time, you can drink about two cups of water to awaken the body’s various functions and to clean the bowels. Following that, you can drink half a cup of water every 10 minutes. However, drinking water should be avoided within the period of half an hour before meals and one hour after meals. This is because it would dilute the stomach’s acid and affect digestion.
The effect of detoxification is be better if you drink lemon water because the acid in lemon enhances digestion and the vitamin C in lemon aids in clearing the bowels. Making lemon water is very simple, just add the juice of one or half a lemon to one litre of water and add a little salt — just enough so you can barely taste the salt. A good practice is to get a one litre water bottle and carry it with you so you can drink water at any moment of the day.
2. Fasting
The word “fasting” sounds terrifying – we cannot even survive without eating, how can it be a type of natural therapy? However if fasting is carried out properly, it can really let the body expel its toxins in a short period of time.
The theory of fasting can be explained by looking at our digestive system. Our digestive system has two main functions – taking in nutrients and self-healing through detoxification. The reason why our body accumulates waste is because our digestive system cannot effectively handle both functions simultaneously. When we fast, we don’t eat, our digestive system does not need to absorb nutrients, thus it is then able to carry out its detoxification function and help us heal ourselves.
There are two main reasons why people are not healthy in this modern day: the first is the accumulation of toxins and the second is stress. Stress can be reduced through activities like yoga and meditation, whereas to “clean” ourselves, we would need to limit our food intake and detoxify our body.
Toxins do not only come from our polluted environment, they also come from the by-product of our food – mainly food that is difficult to digest, such as egg, beans, fish, meat, snacks and fried food. Therefore to prevent toxins from forming in our body, the most basic way is to choose the correct food and make sure we do not eat except when we are really hungry. It is best to eat high-fibre and fresh food and drink more fruit juice, especially the juice of citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges.
As for detoxification, apart from drinking more water it would be good if you can fast one day every week or fast when you catch the flu. It is however important that fasting be done with the guidance of a specialist as incorrect fasting can be harmful.
So, there it is: drink water and make the proper use of fasting to help detoxify your body. Both practices will help you to have the best possible health.

How to Easily Quit Smoking Today!

January 3rd, 2010

It is no longer a secret that smoking dangerous to human health. It is however not only injurious to one’s health generally but also one of the most difficult habits to overcome.

Please do not misunderstand me here. I am in no way an apologist for those people who keep smoking because they believe that it is impossible to stop it.

As a matter of fact, they cannot be further from the truth! And I believe that most of such people continue to smoke either because they are not yet ready to give up the smoking habit or they simply lack the information on how to go about it.

This article is for that category of smokers who are sincerely ready to give up the habit. I mean those people who have come to discover how dangerous smoking is to their health and who are ready to do something positive about it.

It is no longer a secret that most countries in the world are coming up with laws banning smoking in public places. This is not an assault on cigarette producing companies but an informed attempt by responsible governments to protect its valued citizens from the inherent dangers associated with smoking.

A Healthy Nation is a Wealthy Nation!

I do not intend to dabble into reasons why people should give up smoking in this article. I am more concerned about how to help the willing ones to succeed in their quest to give up this dangerous habit.

I have discovered that most successful “quit smoking products are effective mainly because they do not only teach you how to quit smoking but actually kill your appetite for smoking.

Make no mistake about this. I am not talking about hypnotism here. Neither is it what people call “Neuro-linguistic Programming”.

(I have always wondered what linguistic anything has to do with smoking, talk less of neuro-anything).

Anyway, what I am talking about here is simply a number of truths concerning the psychology of smoking that explains why a person and how he or she can overcome this injurious habit. I have arranged these in form of tips for those who honestly desire to quit smoking once and for all.

Tip #1: Accept that smoking is dangerous to your health, can cut short your life and so needs to be gotten rid of.

Tip #2: Prepare yourself psychologically to be ready to do all it takes to get liberated from this bondage because that is exactly what smoking is – BONDAGE!

Tip #3: Rid your entire immediate environment of items associated with smoking as much as possible. In other words, get rid of items like your old cigarette packs, lighters, matches, ashtrays, and so on.

Tip #4: Ensure that nobody and I mean NOBODY smokes in your house, car, garden and everywhere you have control over. If you have smoker friends who insist on doing their smoking in your house, you will need to choose between your life and them. And I am sure you won’t find it difficult to make the right choice here.

Tip #5: Never, ever doubt your decision and ability to quit smoking. You have made the right decision. Stick to it as if your life depends on it. It actually does, after all.

Tip #6: Get a harmless product as a replacement for cigarettes so that whenever you have a craving to smoke, you simply take that replacement. It could be a bubble gum, a peppermint or something else.

For the purpose of this article, I will stop here for now. The rest of these tips and other related articles on health matters can be found at http://healthjoint.blogspot.com.
