The rise in the number of fast foods joints that have a lot of saturated fat in the meals, the use of a lot of refined sugar in sodas and other processed foods and eating food with less fiber have all contributed to the fact that there are more people than before who are classified as either overweight or are obese. A lot of other factors cause this to happen such as genetics, overeating and as people age; the metabolism slows down making it harder than before to burn the food that was just consumed. The rate that a person loses weight is commensurate to how it is gained. Rapid weight is not good advisable since it leaves the person with lose skin and the only way to get rid of that would require surgery. Weight loss depends on the condition of the person which includes weight, health, calorie-intake, age, gender, lifestyle, stress level and routine. Being overweight does not necessarily make a person unhealthy. It just makes the person a bit unfashionable. Studies have shown that people who are a bit overweight live longer than those who have normal weight. There is no quick or overnight solution for quick weight loss. Nutritionists and other health experts will say that a person’s weight with proper exercise can actually help lose a certain number of pounds per week The best way to do this is with a low calorie diet and an exercise plan. The first thing a person needs to do is to choose a diet program designed by a dietitian or another health professional. The patient has to be evaluated before any program can be made. The program usually consists of an eating plan and an exercise program that does not require the use of supplements or one to purchase any expensive fitness equipment.  The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and lose weight. A good diet should have food from all the food groups. This is made up by 2 things. The first is carbohydrates. The food that a person consumes should have vitamins, minerals and fiber. A lot of this can come from oats, rice, potatoes and cereals. The best still come from vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.  The second is fat which can come from mono and poly saturated food sources rather than animal fats. Since fat contains more than double the number of calories in food, this should be taken in small quantities to lose weight. All diet plans are designed to make the person induce reduced amount of calories into the body. This does not mean that the person has to eat less. It just means that one has to eat smart by choosing the foods that have less calories. This makes it possible for someone to lose weight without the need to eat less. During the course of the program, the person should still consult with the doctor and other health experts to monitor ones progress. There will be times that it is essential to modify the diet plan to further lose weight. It is up to the person already to stick to the program to see that it works.

What The Food Industry Does Not Want You to Know!

In recent years, the number of over weight and obese men, women and children has increased sharply in the United States. There are multiple reasons why this is occurring, ranging from lack of exercise to poor eating habits. A resent study appearing in the American Journal of Public Health indicates that we not even be aware of some of the main causes of obesity. The study concludes that over the past 20 years, the size of portions served outside the home has steadily increased without consumer knowledge.

Food served outside the home accounted for about 37% of a typical household’s food budget in 1970. This number has grown to almost 50% of the budget. This increase in time spent eating outside the home, matched with an increase in portion sizes given at restaurants, poses a serious health risk for us.

So who is to blame? The study sampled foods from both fast food restaurants and more traditional “sit-down” restaurants and found that both have increased their portion sizes immensely. It was also noted that the vast majority of the fast food restaurant establishments that had the largest increase in portion sizes were also the most financially successful! Startlingly, some of the portions served were found to exceed FDA and USDA standards by a whopping 700%!

It doesn’t end here, however. In recent years, increased or deceptive portion sizes have begun to creep into our homes. In a recent study reported by MSNBC News, many well known cereal brands were found filling their single server boxes with much more food than their label states. The USDA Agricultural Research Service reports that this deception can equal anywhere from 10 to 100 extra calories and 3 to 19 extra carbohydrates per serving. It is very important to understand that this could seriously harm people whether they have diabetes or are on any diet program. Other foods in violation were cookies, pasta, muffins, meats and bagels.

With this abuse of standards, we are harming ourselves in more ways than we realize. Many of the foods in violation are full of calories, carbohydrates and fat, and when eaten in excess can eventually lead to serious health complications.

The trend of over proportioning has entered almost every part of our lives. Everything from beverages to candy bars is increasing in size. Even cookbooks now have decreased the number of servings expected from a recipe, reflecting an assumption that people eat more.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

* Don’t feel obligated to eat all of your food when you eat out. In fact, a smaller portions size is best.

* While at home serve dinners in smaller bowls, tricking the mind into thinking into thinking you have more food.

* Don’t be completely dependant on food labels and consult your doctor related to any medical questions.

Remember, only you have the power to fight back against deceptive portion sizes.

It’s always easy to gain weight and damned hard to lose it. Eating is one of the true pleasures in life and refraining from food has huge physical and psychological implications that cannot be easily discarded. Snacks are another threat to a healthy life by bringing in too much calories and by being too readily available when hunger strikes. The correct option for between meals snacks is to buy fruit. Sure, it may not taste as good, especially if one is used to chips or other types of snacks, but one or two bananas or some apples are far better for one’s health. A very important point is to remember that habits can be kicked just as easily as they take root. By ignoring the temptation of chips you will gradually lose interest in them and get used to fruit. Does fast food cause obesity? That depends on what you might call fast food. The simple answer is no, but the explanation of how fast food and obesity are interrelated may surprise you.Before we begin, you might want to read a little about the history of childhood obesity in order to see how this correlation between fast food and obesity may prove true. White Castle restaurant has been credited with creating the first “fast food” chain back in 1921. However, hamburgers weren’t even eaten regularly and were considered unclean and unsafe back then. (My how times have changed!)At this same time, there was practically no mention of obesity in the US or elsewhere. People were overweight, but not to the extent that we are today. Since obesity was almost non-existent, an author in the Literary Digest in 1923 asked ““Are we going to become a physically lazy nation, and, through lack of exercise, a people of pendulous abdomens and small legs?”Seems as though the 1920’s may have been a precursor to our hefty sizes today. In the 1940’s, drive in restaurants were first established and began growing in popularity across the US. Obesity begins to rise, but very few statistics were kept. This was the age of our parents and grandparents. The World War II Era. The first McDonald’s had just opened toward the end of the decade. Now fast food was just beginning to take off.

Now we are beginning to see obesity in the news, and statisticians are keeping track of the health of our nation. We now have solid data from that bygone age and we can get real facts on how fat we are. Still, “Does fast food cause obesity” is being asked and answered in several different ways. You decide for yourselfIn pre-1940, it is almost impossible to find data on the rate of obesity in America. However, in the 1950’s, we do have some pretty good data to work with. In the 1960s, obesity went up about to about 11.3% of the nation. By the 1970s, obesity was well into the double digits at 14.4%. Also in the 1970s, Americans spent a total of $6 Billion on fast food! As you can see, fast food and obesity have a small correlation at this time.

Flash forward to the 1980s when there was a 78% increase in the number of fast food stores during the decade. By the end of the 80s, there were almost 120,000 fast food restaurants in the US. During that same time, obesity in the US rose to almost one quarter of the population (23%)! The number of overweight individuals surpassed the 50% mark and reached 56% of the population. Things are starting to look glum, aren’t they?By the end of the 1990s, obesity finally rose to 30%! That is almost one in three people being considered obese. Not to mention the fact that two-thirds of the nation was considered overweight in 2000. At that same time, guess how much Americans spent on fast food? Well, obesity doubled since the 70s, think maybe spending doubled too? Try again! Drum roll please….Americans spent $110 billion on fast food in 2000! Disgusted? Me too! Because there are not too many fast food restaurants that offer that many healthy choices on their menus, it seems like we are always stuck eating somewhere fast and unhealthy because we have not planned well enough and ran out of time. So since it is almost inevitable, how do we make the most out of a fast food meal without putting on the pounds?
The great thing is that many fast food restaurant chains are now required to post calorie information on their menu boards. This now makes it much easier for you to make a better decision of what you can and should order when on the run. Something to think about when ordering food is to be aware of the number of calories that are in salad dressings, cheese and sour cream. Although you may be thinking you are eating healthy while ordering a salad, you actually may not be because of the calories from those small additions. When you order a grilled chicken sandwich, order it without the mayonnaise. Restaurants have become much more conscious of menu alternatives like salads with low calorie or fat free dressings.
If you don not see these items, ask. They are often times available, just not displayed with the unhealthier choices.
A few general guidelines that may be helpful when eating on the go are:
1. Stick to the lighter menu options. Restaurants are offering more healthy choices on their menus. You must find the ones that you should be ordering to maintain a nutritional lifestyle. Healthy fast food eating is dependent on you understanding what is in the fast food items and making the right choice.
2. Understand the portion sizes. Most value sized combo meals are well over 1,000 calories. This is way too many calories for your body to burn through without leaving some to be absorbed as FAT. If they don not offer smaller portion sizes, ask for a takeout bag and eat it another day for another meal. I do this most every time that I eat out, even at the healthier restaurants. It is very important to control how much goes into your body every meal. Just because food may be healthy does not mean you can still eat twice as much as your body needs, you will not be able to absorb it all or burn through it, and
that means it has to go somewhere, your fat cells.
3. Order Food To Go. Research has shown that humans are more likely to eat more when they are eating out. So what does that mean? Avoid the situation to where you are likely to overindulge.
Even though it seems impossible, eating fast food in a healthy way is possible. You just need to pay more attention to the healthier options that these restaurants now provide you on their menus. This may be extremely difficult in the beginning because of the habits you have formed, but the payoff to your health is worth it.

Fast Food and Childhood Obesity

Recently the childhood obesity has taken a form of endemic in the United States. Rate of childhood obesity has increased by 5 fold from 1970s to the current time. Consumption of food rich in calories and fats are the main culprits for this increasing trend in the childhood obesity. A major part of this increase calorie intake by children comes from consumption of fast food.

In 1970s fast food constituted only 2 percent of the daily meal of a child and by mid 1990s this has increased to 10 of the daily meal of our children. Today one tenth of our children aged between 2 and 5 years and 15% of children between ages 6 and 19 are overweight.

A recent study conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture looked at the food intake data of children in the United States. These researchers analyzed data from 6,212 school children with ages ranging from 4 to 19 years. The study found that children who ate fast food consumed significantly higher number of calories compared to those children who did not consume fast food. They found that those children who ate fast food had significantly higher consumption of fat, saturated fat, and carbohydrates. Also those children who consumed fast food added more sugar to their meals, drank more of sweetened beverages and ate less milk, fiber and vegetables.

This study has shown that consumption of fast food on a regular basis does not provide the necessary nutrients and had more fat, and calories. Lack of essential nutrients may have a negative effect on the children especially at the growing years. Consumption of excessive calories, unless balanced by physical activity would lead to increased body fat and obesity. Increasing trend towards consumption of fast food is a major contributor to childhood overweight and obesity.

Parents and teachers of children should make every effort to make our children realize the dangers of fast food. They should be briefed about the negative health implications of fast food consumption. The parents should value nutrition and make healthy diet a family priority thus passing the good message to children.

In 1970s children spent much time in outdoor activities. In our modern lives children do not get as much physical activity they should be getting. Our children spend more time on the computers, television and video games. Our children and youth do not eat healthy meals and do not meet recommended levels of physical activity. Greater emphasis on good nutrition, avoidance of fast food and increased physical activity are the corner stones of a healthy childhood. Every parent and teacher should contribute toward the goal of bringing up our children healthy.

We are a nation of addicts and our addiction is spreading worldwide. No, it is not tobacco or even alcohol abuse that is so prevalent. It is our addiction to fast food that is killing us. Americans consume thousands of pounds of greasy cheeseburgers every day. Not to mention the fries and drink. The total calories for this basic no frills fare from Ronnies steak house is a whopping 1200! Add just one vanilla triple thick shake to the tune of 1110 calories and you are at your daily limit.
There is no escaping the onslaught, every small town in the nation has at least on fast food restaurant. Many have more than that, in my town of less than 25,000 people we have McDonald’s, Hardees, Arbys, Taco Bell, Quiznos, Dairy Queen, Burger King 3 Sonics, 2 Subways and more pizza joints than I can count. With this type of saturation, is it any wonder that fast food obesity is the fastest rising health threat?
Anyone who had seen the documentary Super Size Me has been shocked at by not only the link between fast food and obesity causes but also the other health risks the show brought to light. We knew that the food probably was not good for us but even the physicians involved in this experiment never dreamed that a person could exhibit liver damage from fast food. If you have not seen the film, Morgan Spurlock ate only Mcdonalds for 30 days in the documentary.
Clearly, our love affair with the cheeseburger has gone on long enough but is there truly a link between the fast food and obesity causes?
Since fast food began in 1960’s America has steadily gotten heavier. Today 60% of us are overweight and a full 25% are obese. Alarmingly it seems our children are not escaping the trap either. Today there has been a 40% rise in type II diabetes in children, a disease that was once known as adult onset because it did not strike until around age 50. In addition, let’s not be misled obesity causes type II diabetes.
Nevertheless maybe these are all just strange coincidences. Let us look at the Mcdonald’s happy meal although the calories are not given for the meal on their menu we can take the individual parts and add it our self.

Small Coke – 110 (we all know they are not drinking juice)
That totals 690 calories or nearly half the recommended daily allowance! Keep in mind this is just the basic no frills small meal, get them the big kid’s meal or a regular big mac meal and the totals jump even higher. If you think that is bad check out the calorie count for the double whopper, 920 calories, and that is just the burger no cheese! Maybe it is not such a coincidence after all. There is strong evidence that fast food is an obesity cause.
So exactly what is the big deal? What if a few people and their children get fast food obesity? This is a free country we should be able to do what we like right. Maybe so however we need to be informed on what impact this will have on our health. People who are fast food obese have a great health risk. The diseases associated with obesity include type II diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and stroke. Any one of these diseases can be at best debilitating and at worst deadly. The danger increases with amount of weight and age as well as other bad habits such as smoking or alcohol use. America’s obesity causes are a problem we desperately need to solve; it is a ticking time bomb. Just imagine if over half the people in the country were disabled. That leaves 40% of the nation working and trying to cover disability payments and health care. That is a serious risk to our nation but more than that, we have a population at risk of dying far too young all because of fast food obesity.

How to Prevent Obesity in Children

Childhood obesity is not an easy thing to over come in today’s society. As more and more fast food joints pop up in neighborhoods and advertisements of junk food keep aiming at children. It is not an easy task to sway your child to eating healthy and properly. It seems frustrating knowing there are so much unhealthy choices of consumption for your child. So what is a parent to do in this day and age? It starts at home. Being aware of what your child eats and consumes is a huge step. By seeing and watching what your child eats gives you insight on your child’s eating habits. As well seeing what types of food and drinks they like. It is important to follow a daily plan of nutritional needs. Eating well balanced meals and light healthy choice snacks is a good place to start. And having some type of excising embedded in their routine is needed as well. Instead of you making all the choices that go into meal planning. Having your child contribute can also spark them to be interested in eating right. Taking them with you to the grocery store or making out a list before hand can easily help them make the transfer from junk food to healthy eating easier. The more you talk to your child about the facts of eating healthy the more they will understand. Showing them the pro’s and con’s of it will help them adapt to a better understanding as to why it’s important to eat healthy. Educate your self on why it is important to eat healthy. By doing this you will get a better grasp on helping your child being healthy. By learning through books or online sites you can make better choices at buying food for your child. If you continue to do a daily routine with your child you are sure to maintain a good habit of staying fit. And always encourage your child with positive improvements of their way of eating. As any change is difficult to a child if he or she is used to a certain way of doing things. Always remind your child why it is best to eat certain types of food that will not harm them in the long run. As you want your child to have a long and happy life. Helping your child to better them selves is always a task at hand but with time they are sure to get the hang of things. And the progress they make in the long run is a great reward of having a better healthier life then a short unhealthy one at best.
