Obese Children Get Picked on Too Much!

December 4th, 2009

Children in general have a natural tendency to pick on the weakest link and the obese child is a prime target. They can actually be downright nasty. Obese children may hide their emotions from the taunting but deep inside the hurt runs deep. Overweight children have lower self esteem, have violent outbursts, get to the point of tears, not to mention the health risks. They want to be like the other kids but by not being accepted they get into the “I don’t care” anymore frame of mind. This is a dangerous space for the obese child to be in. They start to feel isolated and shameful which doesn’t solve any of their problems. The taunting actually makes the situation worse because they begin thinking that there is no hope. Their physical appearance and lack of peers causes them to develop other deeper emotional issues that can be lethal. The obese child wants help and in some cases therapy may be the only answer not because of the obese issue but because of the loneliness issue. They need to be reassured that we all

are beautiful in one form or the other and that beauty is only skin deep.

Too many times I’ve seen some parents that even treat the chubby kid differently. It is not intentional but subconsciously they treat them differently. When they become aware of this there is a need to nurture hurt feelings and help rebuild self esteem.

What can we do to change this trend? It all starts at home. The chubby kid needs special love. As a family we need to stick together and put ourselves in their shoes. We need to feel that pain and do something about it. Clean out the pantry of junk food and replace it with healthy snacks. Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Encourage them to eat more slowly . Most importantly we need to change our own lifestyles to promote a healthier environment. Proper nutrition, exercise, and love will do wonders for the chubby kid and it won’t hurt us any either. Start today because tomorrow never comes.

Overweight Children Need After School Activities

December 2nd, 2009

Is your child overweight? What does your child do when they come home from school? Have a snack and watch TV or play video games? Research and studies show that our children are growing more obese by the day. Many families all over North America are struggling to keep the weight of their children within reasonable limits. As a parent, I know that it’s nearly impossible for me to look into the tear-filled eyes of my son and
refuse food. However, the types of food and activities are the key.
So, what’s the alternative? Stop buying the junk food and colas and no TV or video games after school. Children tend to plop themselves on the sofa and munch away happily when they are in front of the TV or games. However, if the TV is off, their natural buoyancy will lead them to do more activities and other things that will cause their body to move. They in turn will be diverted from eating food.
Recreational after school activities are a must if your child is starting to put on those unnecessary pounds. It is better to begin these activities at an early age and get them use to being active after school rather than sitting around. The more weight the child gains in the earlier years, the harder he or she will have to work to loose it later on, not to mention the name calling and ridiculing that overweight children must deal with. There are TONS of activities that can occur after school instead of sitting in front of the TV. Walking, hiking, raking leaves, cleaning the pool or swimming in it, baseball, football, ,martial arts, skating, walking the dog, cleaning your car, even cleaning their room. Anything can be considered an activity as long as your child is not sitting and eating. These activities can be fun and entertaining! It doesn’t need to fell like work.
If your child does require a snack after school, make sure the fridge and cupboards are filled with healthy, nutritional choices and not the high fat, sugary ones. Pop/colas should be illegal to kids under the age of sixteen. There is no reason whatsoever to provide a child with pop.
Get your kids moving! Exercise in moderation never hurt anyone!

Children Fat? Child Obesity is Now a Big Problem

November 24th, 2009

It use to be just material for an anecdote that we had as a classmate an obese child or teenager and we may get along with those in that conditions very well as some other people may even make jokes at them and do some bad things. But the fact is that it was just a few people being obese and that’s why they called our attention by being kind of different. But those days are long gone. Child obesity is no longer the characteristic of a few children but it has become an extended condition that is affecting an important percentage of the youth population in America and many industrialized countries.

It is widely documented that obesity is a big threat to the health of our children in many ways. For example:

- It affects their cardiovascular system

- It can affect the lungs

- Posture and bone mal formation during the growing period can result from being an obese child

- There can also be Gastrointestinal problems cause by obesity

But why is that our children are becoming so obese at a record rate? The answer, as you may already know, comes directly from the high consumption of calories, and where do these calories come from? They mainly come from junk food, particularly the excessive consumption of junk food against more healthy and natural food options.

However that’s not all, junk food may be the primary cause but there is a second and equally important factor that has helped to spread the obesity pandemic among our youngsters. This is the dramatic absence of physical activity in many cases of obese children, due to long hours in front of the tv playing video games or simply watching tv programs. This doesn’t mean that we should confiscate all video games and throw the tv out the window but all things must be done wisely and not in excess. We all must remain ourselves that we have a body too and that it needs maintenance and activity to function in optimal conditions. Specially children and youngsters that are in the growing stages of their physical development and can’t forget about their bodies.

Child obesity doesn’t have to be a cruel destiny for our children. This is a battle that you can win. Let us help. Find more information here:

Strategies for Overweight Children – Establish a Junk Food Age Requirement

November 20th, 2009

The number of overweight children is at an all time high and the numbers are increasing. Strategies to reverse this disturbing trend must be created and put into action. One strategy would be to establish an age requirement for the purchase of junk foods and fast foods.Preventable DeathsSmoking and obesity are the two leading causes of preventable diseases in the United States. Smoking is the number one cause. However, obesity is a very close second.Smoking related diseases include:

Obesity related diseases include: * Cardiovascular Diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease and Stroke * Type 2 Diabetes * The Metabolic Syndrome * Cancers such as colon, breast, endometrium, kidney, esophagus, and gallbladder * High Blood Pressure * Gall Bladder Disease * Osteoarthritis * Sleep Apnea * AsthmaSo what is the difference between smoking and obesity? Children are not allowed to purchase cigarettes, but they are allowed to purchase the foods that lead to obesity.Age RequirementThe government should establish a fast food age requirement similar to the age requirement that was established for smoking many years ago. This age requirement would prohibit the purchase of certain foods for people under the age of eighteen. The prohibited foods would be foods with: * High calories per serving * High percentage of saturated fats * High percentage of trans fats * High percentage of sugars * High percentage of high fructose corn syrupSetting up this age requirements would have many benefits including:

Children should be allowed to eat junk foods and fast foods occasionally in moderation. However, this should only occur under the watchful eyes of an adult. Establishing an age requirement would help in this process.
