Acid Reflux Causes – Know your Gerd Causes, and Get Relief Fast

January 8th, 2010

Knowing your acid reflux causes can help you get natural relief instead of reaching for the indigestion remedies all day long. Acid reflux can be a harmful disease, and stopping it before it starts can be a massive benefit to your health.

Acid reflux is caused by food and stomach acid coming back up from your stomach and entering your esophagus. This is because the lower esophagus sphincter ( LES ) relaxes and opens up to allow the food and acid to enter. It will then close so it can’t get back into your stomach straight away, and this is what causes the burning behind your cheat bone.

The foods that you eat will play a big part in acid being forced up into your oesophagus. Spicy foods are the main culprits, and cutting these types of foods out of your diet will help ease the symptoms of your reflux problem.

Fried and fatty foods take longer to digest so they will hang around in your stomach longer. This increases the pressure in your stomach which puts more pressure on your LES muscle.

Caffeine can relax your lower esophagus sphincter so the contents will enter your oesophagus easier.

Alcohol is another substance that will relax your LES muscle resulting in more of your stomach contents entering your oesophagus.

Eating very near your bedtime, usually within 2 to 3 hours increases your chances of night-time acid reflux. Try and eat your last meal before 6.00 pm so it has plenty of time to digest before you lay down. An acid reflux pillow will raise the top half of your body more so the acid that does come up has gravity on its side to let it back into your stomach during the night.

You might thinks it’s ok to take indigestion tablets or remedies every time you have your reflux, but these have side effects with long term use. And with the digestion problems they can cause later they will eventually contribute to your GERD symptoms.
