Kicking the Habit – Putting an End to Fast Food and Snacks in Your Diet

January 5th, 2010

It’s always easy to gain weight and damned hard to lose it. Eating is one of the true pleasures in life and refraining from food has huge physical and psychological implications that cannot be easily discarded. Nobody likes to have to give up a pleasure, which is why many people drift farther and farther into fat without doing anything to stop the process. Moreover, recent data showed that the body does not respond to diets as doctors thought it should. The body has to adapt to changes and diets are seen as lean periods that should be offset by making fat harder to burn. While the body is certainly the most complex instrument we posses in our lives, it cannot discern between actual lean times and diets. Another problem for the body is the widespread use of fast food, snacks and soft drinks. Fast food is highly powered food that fools the stomach into calling for more, despite the fact that one giant burger is the caloric equivalent of an entire meal. The giant burger is not usually enough to fill the stomach of an adult person, so most people eat more than one and wash it down with soft drinks that are little more than sugared water. This is an unfortunate way of eating, since the body gets far more than it needs from burgers and soft drinks. The largely sedentary lifestyles led by most urban residents mean that the excess calories will certainly be stored as fat. Snacks are another threat to a healthy life by bringing in too much calories and by being too readily available when hunger strikes. The correct option for between meals snacks is to buy fruit. Sure, it may not taste as good, especially if one is used to chips or other types of snacks, but one or two bananas or some apples are far better for one’s health. A very important point is to remember that habits can be kicked just as easily as they take root. By ignoring the temptation of chips you will gradually lose interest in them and get used to fruit. Once chips are no longer a staple of your diet, you will find yourself wondering what was so good about them anyway.

Skipping Breakfast and Fast Food Cause Weight Gain for Young Adults

January 5th, 2010

When teenagers enter adulthood they tend to skip breakfast and turn to fast food products, as a recent study shows. Researchers from the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at the Miriam Hospital and Brown Medical School collected data from two “Waves.”

The first wave included teenagers with ages between eleven and twenty-one starting with April until August 1996. The second wave watched the same adolescents group, from August 2001 to April 2002 and their ages were between eighteen and twenty-seven.

During the five year period between the two waves, the number of overweight people increased to forty-seven percent from twenty-nine as the fast-food consumption increased and breakfast was neglected, according to lead author Heather Niemeier.

Fast food consumption increased to about three days per week for young adults while the number of days when they eat breakfast decreased to three days per week from four-five in adolescence.

Breakfast may be seen as an unnecessary meal and skipped by adolescents who work or go to college. Overeating is caused by skipping breakfast and it makes people choose unhealthy food that just fill them up, says Niemeier.

Excess weight from adolescence was associated with health problems from adulthood such as: fasting insulin, systolic blood pressure, increased level of HDL-cholesterol, and risks for heart disease.

Fat Loss: Fast Food Junkie to Health Style Savvy

January 5th, 2010

When overweight individuals are told they have to change their eating styles, the dread that comes with this thought is at varying degrees. In other words, some people’s pre- weight loss eating habits are not as bad as what someone else’s is. Their lack of losing fat may have to do with some other factors. It’s the fast food junkies that face pure panic when they are told they must change their eating habits. Part of the problem, and part of the failure for some people is they try to make the transition too quickly. Just as some people can quit smoking cold turkey, while others have to wean themselves off.

If you have tried all kinds of methods to try to switch to a healthy diet and it has failed, then try this slower but perhaps more effective method.

Start in the morning and plan your meals for today. Don’t consider what is good or what is bad for you at this particular moment. Don’t even think about the fact that you are starting a life style change. Now write out a list of healthy foods for each of those meals. Use five food items for each meal. Next, pick out one healthy food that you like the best out of each one of the categories. Now remove one of the unhealthier foods and substitute it with one of the healthy foods in each group. Continue doing this on a regular basis  until you have eventually replaced all of the unhealthy foods with the healthy ones. This is just one of the many innovative ways you can become health style savvy. Don’t worry if it takes a while between each transition that’s fine, just stick with it, eventually you won’t even remember what fast foods were.  You will naturally have moved to healthier eating.

Can I Eat Some Fast Food And Still Lose Weight?

January 5th, 2010

Because there is so much fast food out there that is loaded with fat, lots of sodium, and is high in calories, many people believe the only way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight is to stay away from fast food restaurants.
Yes, it is true that a fast food meal that includes a burger, fries, and a soft drink is not healthy and has too many calories in it. But there are fast food options that are healthy and okay to have. Here’s one way to think of it. Most weight loss experts today say having 5 to 6 small meals a day is better then having 3 larger meals and that skipping meals is a bad idea because it leads to binging later on in the day. So is it better to skip lunch because you are busy and only have access to a fast food restaurant? Or should you go to that restaurant and make the healthiest choice you can? (And while it’s true that you cannot always get super healthy food at a fast food restaurant, you can almost always find a reasonably healthy choices.)
I’m not saying you have to walk into that fast food restaurant and ask them for a bowl of plain lettuce either. What are some decent choices?
• Go Mexican but don’t have the taco salad in the edible bowl. That taco salad at Taco Bell that you probably think is a healthy choice contains 860 calories and 46 grams of fat. Even without the edible bowl, the salad still has 490 calories and 25 grams of fat. Instead consider having something at Taco Bell with a soft flour or corn tortilla that is done in their “fresco style,” which means they use a salsa of tomatoes, onions, and cilantro in place of cheese and sauce on an item. Two grilled steak tacos done in their fresco style contains 340 calories and 10 grams of fat. Two of their ranchero chicken soft tacos are 340 calories and 8 grams of fat (nutrition information for Taco Bell was found at: http://www.yum.com/nutrition/documents/tb_nutrition.pdf). If you are at any fast food Mexican restaurant, look for similar choices; items with flour or corn tortillas that are not deep fried; salsa toppings instead of ones containing cheese, cheese sauces, and sour cream; low fat cheese instead of full fat cheese if you really want the cheese.
• Have a burger if you really want one, but have the regular hamburger, skipping that slice of processed American cheese. You know the fries aren’t a healthy choice, a side salad with light dressing is much better. But if you have to have fries (and once in a while is okay even when trying to lose weight because a person is much less likely to be successful on their diet if they completely forbid all their favorite food) have the smallest size available. You may have to order the kid’s meal to get a small order of fries, but that’s okay. Make your beverage water (most fast food restaurants have bottled water now which is great for people on the go) or a diet soft drink.
• Grilled chicken sandwiches are okay if you skip all the extra toppings; deep fried chicken sandwiches are bad. People have a tendency to think a chicken sandwich is healthy because chicken is healthy. But once that chicken goes for a swim in the deep fryer, it’s not so healthy. A grilled chicken sandwich from Wendy’s has 370 calories and 8 grams of fat. A deep fried chicken fillet sandwich from Wendy’s has 470 calories and 16 grams of fat. If you’re thinking their mandarin chicken salad is a better choice, it has over 500 calories and 26 grams of fat.
While eating fast food is not something any health expert will recommend having for every meal every day of the week, a person can eat at fast food restaurants some of the time still lose weight. It’s all about being informed about the calories and nutrition of the food available at restaurants and making the best choices possible.

Inner Cleansing To Correct Fast Food Diets

January 4th, 2010

A few years ago, a documentary entitled, “Super Size Me” produced by and starring Morgan Spurlock, created a buzz when he conducted an experiment about eating regularly at a world famous American fast food.

After 30 days of eating huge servings at the same fast food, Spurlock exhibited signs of liver damage, causing alarm to his fiancée, vegan chef and health counselor Alex Jamieson.

To help reverse the effects of the experiment, Jamieson placed Spurlock on a detoxification diet that effectively cleaned his colon and brought him back to good health. Thus, much attention has not only been placed on the ill effects of the Standard American Diet (also known as “S.A.D.”) consisting of high fat, high sodium and high sugar food but also on the importance of regular inner cleansing.

The Standard American Diet is not confined to Americans as much of the fast food craze has reached other parts of the world. The S.A.D. is unhealthy mainly because it lacks fiber and healthy nutrients while it is high in sugar, caffeine, salt, fat, alcohol, additives and chemicals.

Whether taken regularly in small amounts or in a huge sitting, these substances can cause digestive problems. They are not easily digested and usually remain in the colon for years unless it is cleaned out with the help of inner cleansing ingredients.

The toxic build-up contributes further to the difficulty of the colon to eliminate waste leading to a vicious cycle of accumulation and non elimination. Typically, fiber from plant sources and plenty of water taken daily can do the job for your colon.

If you have been on a Standard American Diet for a long time, you may have to undergo colon cleaning for weeks before experiencing positive results. But natural inner cleansing only occurs if you have the purest diet.

Instead of consuming fried food and sugary drinks, you need to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and to drink more water.

Inner cleansing is not just for those who eat fast food everyday. Eating fried and unhealthy foods can make you an ideal condidate for detoxification.

In her book entitled, “The Great American Detox Diet: Feel Better, Look Better, and Lose Weight by Cleaning Up Your Diet,” Alex Jamieson takes note of a British medical journal that reported how eating fast food for as little as twice a week can increase your risk of developing diabetes.

But inner cleansing isn’t just for fast food consumers.

We All Have Choices When Forced to Eat Fast-Food – Make Healthy Ones!

January 4th, 2010

When out with friends or family, how easy it is to stop and eat at a fast food restaurant? It is very easy and convenient. We are all starved for more time. I was out recently with some friends and stopped at a fast food restaurant to eat. I hate fast food restaurants, but sometimes you just do not have time for anything else and you have to go there. You just have to make the best of it and make good choices while finding something healthy to eat.
If you’re forced to eat fast-food, here’s a tip to make sure that you’re not doing much damage to your body… ALWAYS AVOID the soda and anything deep fried including French Fries, hash browns, and anything breaded like chicken nuggets, chicken patties, or breaded fish sandwiches. These are all absolutely soaked in deadly trans fats from the industrial hydrogenated vegetable oils they use to fry all of these items.
Remember, as I’ve said before, I’ve seen studies indicating that as little as 1 gram of artificial trans fat per day can have serious degenerative internal effects in your body such as inflammation, clogging and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, various forms of cancer…not to mention packing on the ab flab. That’s as little as 1 gram!
Consider that a typical fast-food meal of a breaded chicken sandwich (or fish sandwich) along with an order of fries can contain as much as 10 grams of trans fat! Add on a cookie or small piece of pie for dessert (which are usually made with deadly margarine or shortening), and now you’re up to about 13 grams of trans fat with that entire meal.
If 1 gram a day is slowly killing you, imagine what 13 grams is doing! And that was only one meal that you ate. Some people are consuming 20-30 grams of trans fat per day, and not even realizing what they’re doing to themselves internally. Please realize that nobody, I mean NOBODY, is looking out for your health, except for YOU.
Anyway, back to the topic of how to avoid this stuff and eat a reasonably healthy meal on the rare occasion that you’re forced to eat fast-food. As for drinks, avoid the sodas…they’re nothing but heavily processed high fructose corn syrup which will surely end up as extra belly fat. And yes, that mean NO DIET SODA either! This stuff is pure evil to your body. Water is always the best drink, but if you need something with flavor, try unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced tea.
At breakfast, the best choice is an egg, ham, and cheese on an English Muffin (not on a Croissant, which is full of nasty Trans Fat, or a fruit& nut salad. At lunch or dinner, the best choices are a grilled chicken sandwich, chili, a grilled chicken salad without croutons (again croutons = more Trans Fat), or even just a plain cheeseburger. The main take-away point from this little fast-food article is that the nastiest stuff at these fast food joints are the sodas and fries, and any other deep fried items.
For any of you that have seen the movie “Super-Size Me”, you saw how eating fast food every day absolutely destroyed that guy’s health, but did you happen to notice the one guy that was the king of eating Big Macs (or some kind of burger)? I don’t remember what kind of burger it was, but basically this guy has eaten these fast food burgers almost every day of his life for the past 30 years or something like that.
Did you notice that he stated that he almost never eats the fries or soda, even though he eats the burgers every day? And he’s not necessarily overweight. Now I’m not saying that fast-food burgers made with their refined white bread and low quality beef and cheese are the healthiest thing, but the point is it’s the fries and sodas that are the real health disaster.
Alright, so next time you’re out at one of these places, remember these tips and choose smart! By the way, if you haven’t heard yet, McD’s has added a nutrition label to all of their food wrappers now. Remember, that as little as one gram of trans Fat may cause some internal harm and now you can actually see how many grams of trans fat you’re eating right on the food wrapper. That might change your mind about finishing it.

Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to your Sexual Health

January 3rd, 2010

According to a 2006 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 22% of high school students in American smoke cigarettes everyday. In fact, even if the study indicated that smoking had already declined over the last four years, the statistics still show that one in five Americans still smoke cigarettes. A 2005 study revealed that more than 20% of adults in the United States are smokers. While smoking rates among high school students have been on a decline since 1997, the rate of teenagers who smoke is equal to, and in some cases, higher than that of adults. The younger the individuals start smoking, the more likely that they will continue smoke as an adult. Given these figures, it is not surprising that smoking is the leading cause of premature deaths in the United States.

The question is still begging to be asked: Why do teens smoke? Is it because of the influence of media or because they get the habit from adults who smoke? Studies show that many teenagers smoke because they were simply curious about how it would taste or feel like. Others said that they thought that smoking was a good method to achieve weight-loss. Even if the warnings plastered on the cigarette box clearly says that, “Smoking is dangerous to your health,” this has not stopped teens from experimenting or taking up the habit of cigarette use.

Medical evidence suggest that cigarette smoking causes an increase in the body’s metabolic rate and may suppress appetite. But it is important to note that smoking tends to dull the taste buds, which, after all, may be the reason for the “loss of appetite.” This argument is somehow supported by cases of people who gained weight after they stopped smoking. Since their taste buds had already regained their functionality, the former smokers enjoyed their meals more and eventually gained some weigh.

Non-smokers may have found a way to kick the habit but for thousands if not millions of smokers around the world — doing away with the stick is still an on-going struggle. The addiction of smokers to the deadly chemical called nicotine makes it hard for them to stop smoking. Nicotine dependence occurs when the chemicals and other cigarette substances reach the brain and activates the pleasure cells, producing mood-altering effects that give smokers short-term pleasure.

The short-term pleasure of smoking somehow negates the clear message that long-term use of cigarettes could possibly lead to lung cancer, emphysema, and heart failure. Studies also show that smoking has adverse effects on male and female sexual health. A number of studies show that smoking is related to the difficulty getting and maintaining an erection. Many toxins present in cigarettes especially carbon monoxide, can damage the circulatory system, which hinders the flow of blood in the penis which is necessary for erection. In addition, smoking is one of the major causes of erectile dysfunction. A study published in the Journal of Urology in 2000 found out that 68% of men with high blood pressure aged 40-79 experienced erectile dysfunction. At least 45% of these cases were considered severe sexual ailments. High blood pressure in men may lead to low testosterone levels, which is a male hormone that plays a crucial role in the sexual arousal. Low testosterone levels lead to decreased arousal and sexual performance. Toxins found in cigarettes may also harm the testes. Smoking may affect the semen and the sperm, reducing their mobility and quality. Men who smoke tend to have lower sperm counts and malformed sperms than their non-smoking counterparts.

Many substance founds in cigarettes may harm the ovaries, studies show that women who smoke or have smoked in the past may encounter difficulties getting pregnant with the chances of conceiving being decreased by up to 40% for each menstrual cycle. The longer a woman smokes, the more difficult it would be for her to get pregnant. The effects of smoking on sexual health have been taken for granted since the focus of previous studies have been on the ill effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system. Understanding the adverse effects of smoking on one’s sexual health may become a motivation for many to quit smoking. Joining a program that helps people quit smoking; and consulting a doctor about medications that reduce the craving to smoke may also help. Others succeed by using alternative methods like hypnosis. Although it may be a very hard habit to break, quitting smoking is one of the best things people can do to improve their sex lives and their over-all health.

stop fast food in Lunch

January 3rd, 2010

Food can be as powerful a substance as any other drug. You may have seen programmes like half-ton hospital where patients are bed-bound for years and their sleep interspersed with deliveries of fast food. These are at the extreme end, on the brink of death through overloading their systems to freakish proportions. So what is the pull with food and what about the rest of us who aren’t quite that extreme?Well there are many systems at work both physically and psychologically when we eat and we often get the signals confused. Like a need for company translating as a need to eat.For example lets look at carbohydrate cravings. When we could just murder for fresh bread and butter, a gooey chocolate cream cake or a hot bowl of steaming salt ‘n’ vinegar chips. Some of us can control these urges but for others nothing else will do, control goes AWOL; it’s no longer a want it’s a have to. Sensations are magnified especially when we’re on a diet and have been restricting and obsessing about the food even more than usual. The drive, the urge, the cravings, the salivating, the heart beating, the steely focus, the excitement and the anticipation of the fix of sinking our teeth into the juicy triple cheeseburger, our taste buds are tripping out. Then we get it in our sweaty hands, the wait is over, our whole day has been leading up to this moment. Our jaw aches and our mouth slobbers, oh my god, the release, the escape, the euphoria, it’s practically orgasmic! It’s funny, we only taste the first few bites properly but for some reason we can’t stop until everything is finished, gorged down with swigs of coke, then fries, then hot apple pie. Then a couple of bars of chocolate on the way home. Can’t breathe, painfully satisfied, feel bad, greedy, dirty as emerge from the bingeing frenzy back to earth with an overweight bang. We’ve let ourself down. Again. We have no will-power, just a fat pig and we hate ourself even more. There’s only one thing for it, we have to diet tomorrow. There are often also powerful emotional factors at play, as we eat to change the way we feel. And of course when we binge, it blocks stuff out really effectively, especially when the internal chatterbox becomes too unmanageable, too raw, and too real. The all too familiar story: no time to cook, kids are late for soccer practice and McDonald’s is on the way. Since it won’t take more than a few minutes to shoot through the drive through we’ll do the stop fast food in Lunch. Or all too familiar story number 2: lunch hour at work and I need to pick up my dry cleaning, fill a prescription, and take the car to get gas and find time to eat. Sure enough Taco Bell is on the way and they have a drive through as well. These real life situations play out for all of us, millions of us, everyday. Since time has become one of our most precious commodities the sacrifice we make is often in our diet. x

avoid fast food for healthy life

January 1st, 2010

There are two sides of the same coin. You may have heard arguments on both sides regarding healthy foods and fast foods. You may have asked yourself one time or another, are all fast food fat foods? Can you binge on fast food without worrying about your health? How can you eat fast food and still stay healthy? The United States is the leading country when it comes to obesity. The country is top three in the world in terms of existing fast food chains. When you put two and two together, you get to the conclusion that the popularity of fast food restaurants is affecting the health of the consumers.McDonalds’, one of the famous fast food chains in the world, faced a lawsuit in 2003 when parents of a teenage girl claimed that the fast food restaurant is responsible for their daughter’s health problems. Although the case was dismissed, it started the battle of fast food restaurants against health experts.Obesity is not something to laugh about. It can lead to all sorts of complications such as diabetes mellitus type 2, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and, of course, cardiovascular diseases. Aside from that, being on the heavy side can make a person the butt of jokes which ultimately results to social outcasts and suicidal attempts. Sedentary lifestyle and overeating are the main reasons why there are people who are considered obese. You should be familiar with the daily calorie intake. Your calorie intake highly depends on your weight and lifestyle. On average, health specialists stated that the daily calorie intake for women is 1200 calories while it is 1800 for men. Generally, one fast food meal has around 1000 calories. Most of the food offered by fast food restaurants are deep-fried or heated up in the microwave. These processes of food preparation take minimum time unlike home cooked meals. As a result, most fast food products have high calories and are practically swimming in trans-fat.If you take all of these into consideration, then yes, fast food is fat food. Health experts have grounds why they are against eating fast food products. On the other hand, it does not mean that you have to avoid fast food altogether to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Fast food restaurants were a hit because they serve food in minimum time, in good taste, and in lesser price. So how are you going to make the two ends meet?

Quit Smoking for the New Year with Electronic Cigarettes such as Smoke Star, VaporPak, and Smoke 51

December 31st, 2009

The New Year is fast approaching us, have you made your new years resolution? One of the most popular new years resolutions these days is to quit smoking. Everyone is tightening their belt due to the current state of the economy that is why products such as Smoke Star, VaporPak, and Smoke 51 have been dominating the market this holiday season. Not only do they carry a variety of different nicotine levels, but they also allow you to smoke indoors without you having to ingest tar into your lungs at the same time. Learning how to control your smoking is a great way to great ready for the New Year and everything that it may bring. Smoking adds up costing a lot of money per yr and if you were to start using electronic cigarettes you could potentially be saving thousands of dollars per year. One of the major advantages of smoking an electronic cigarette such as Smoke Star, VaporPak, and Smoke 51 is the health benefits that come along side. Smoking e-cigarettes vs. traditional cigarettes do not have you ingesting tar directly into your lungs, do not give off second hand smoke, and has nothing to do with smoke in the first place. An electronic cigarette uses vapor to mimic “lighting up” and giving off a smoke look a like that is better called vapor.Electronic Cigarette forums are available for all brands of cigarettes including Smoke Star, VaporPak, and Smoke 51 Many people are going nuts over electronic cigarettes such as Smoke Star, Vapor Pak, and Smoke 51 for quit smoking, but others are unsure. Because these products have cause such a stir in the smoking community there are many online forums that people can go to to write down their experiences and share what they have gone through when trying Smoke Star, VaporPak, and Smoke 51 electronic cigarettes for the first time. These forums are designed to get the real buzz from actual consumers about the different electronic cigarettes are out there. Just like different brands of cigarettes, there are different brands of electronic cigarettes. People are going to no doubt prefer one brand to the other that is why there are brand conversions on these different forums to try to convert the traditional brand cigarette to the electronic brand cigarette.E-cigarettes review will allow you to determine which brand of e-cigarette (SmokeStar, VaporPak, or Smoke 51) is right for you. There are also e-cigarette reviews out there for you to consult when trying to make the decision as to which brand you are going to try first. You should be aware however that many brands, such as SmokeStar, VaporPak, and Smoke 51 are all giving away free trials of their product. The electronic cigarette is taking over the market at a very fast pace, in which you should not wary or think is out of your technological reach. Electronic cigarettes are not a scam and can help you to seriously cut down or quit all together on your smoking for the New Year.
